If you could go back to change a result....

Considering you didn't watch it, it's amazing how you can recall all that information ;)

At the time I just assumed if we'd have beaten Wigan, we'd have been drawn in the semi against the same team they played (Millwall). This was also partly due to other blues complaining about our bad luck, saying we'd have for to the final cos we'd have been drawn against a Championship club.

But afterwards I was told about the alphabetical ball numbering in the draw, which obviously meant the teams would have come out differently if Everton were there instead of Wigan.

Can't confirm this though, cos I didn't watch it. Likewise, I can't confirm if 1 played 2 and 3 played 4 either. I worked that myself on the basis that the first part was correct.

Any result that stopped Liverpool going to Brussels in 1985 - too damaging for words

I heard a guy talking about Heysel on the radio the other day, who was almost trying to completely absolve Liverpool of any blame for this whatsoever. Talked about the stadium bring sub-standard and falling to pieces (which I think is true), but was also talking about general English football hooligans targeting that game to run riot with axes etc. In fact, he didn't mention Liverpool fans in the conversation at all. What a deluded bunch of gobshites those RS are!

Apart from the obvious ones, that Tranmere game, what a embarrassment that one was, wouldn't mind rewriting that one.
That semi vs Liverpool few years ago, Chelsea wasn't even that good in the final but beat a shocking Liverpool side, we would of had a better chance of winning that cup than the season we lost to Chelsea at Wembley

Where to start.

Here are five of the most important setbacks IMO but in no perticular order.

1985 F.A. Cup Final.......that team would have achieved immortality as League and Cup Double winners, not to mention a European trophy into the bargain.

1975 Carlilse away. We win that, or even the home game against them and we are Champions and the wilderness years of the 70s are eradicated from our history.

2009 Cup Final v Chelsea.....because it is a terrible thing we have supporters in their late 20s and early 30s who have little or no recollection of EFC winning owt.

1971 European Cup Quarter Final v Panathinaikos. Win that and we might have gone on to play Ajax at Wembley in the Final (I think it was at Wembley that year). The Holy Trinity taking on Cruyff and Neeskens would have been something.

1977 the Clive Thomas semi final. Still hurts all these decades later.

That is five I woukd change just for starters :)

Great thread, BTW ;)

Great shout. We would have needed a second result to go our way in 74-75 season to actually win it because of the 2points for a win. We were 3 short. Led Carlisle 2-0 at GP but lost 3-2!!!!!!!! Happy Christmas lads grrrr. Led Sheffield Utd 2-0 in second to last game, got beat 3-2!!!!
RS in semi in 71 was beginning of the end for that team 3 days after panathanaikos......
Clive Thomas semi!!

1971 European Cup quarter final vs Panathinaikos
1984 League Cup final vs Liverpool
1986 FA Cup final vs Liverpool
2009 FA Cup final vs Chelsea
2012 FA Cup semi final vs Liverpool

You talk about the 70s being the wilderness years. Even if you take the Panathiniakos game out of the equation, it's amazing how only a few games (eg the two against Carlisle in 75 and the Clive Thomas semi in 77) could have changed that whole decade. If we'd have won the title in 75 and also won the cup in 77 (I'd have fancied us against Man U in the final), our whole recollection of the 70s would be entirely different.

Then if you add a European Cup win in 71...happy days.

Yip.....so near and yet so far.

Add to that we would have been a long way in front at Christmas in 1977 but for the emergence out the ether of Cloughie's Forest so who knows, we might have kicked on from there to become champions in the spring of '78.

Sadly this kind of stuff is not confined to RS minions.... is the line usually taken in the mainstream media as well.

Thankfully the rank and file fans of all other clubs don't buy it.
