2024/25 Idrissa Gueye

A very good player for us over the years but we need to find better to start in the first team if we want to move on. Sensible to extend him but hopefully he’s not starting every game for us next season
If he maintains this seasons form he's got to be starting every game for us.
He's been our best player this season & it's not even close.

The club should be looking for his successor right now though.

….it’ll take a good one to displace him on his current form.

He’s playing well but I’ve watched him for years on the ball, he’s not top draw. If we want to progress to a more possession based team then we need someone safer in possession.

He’s also extremely good at filtering backwards towards that area at the top of our own penalty area to steal possession or shut off a passing angle or shot. That’s a brilliant trait to have when you play in a low block as we do. It’s also one of the reasons though we end up getting pinned back by teams who dominate possession against us. We need players with the legs to press forward and get up and down the pitch.

For me he’s a bit similar to what Barry was offering in his final years with us. The fans love him because he’s making vital block after vital block but because of his lack of pace he’s actually part of the problem. We need a midfielder with enough mobility to win the ball back before it’s at the point when they’re holding hands with the CBs.

It’s nothing against Idrissa at all because he’s been one of the few players who has sustained good levels with us and he’s been very intelligent in adapting his game from how he played when he first arrived with us to now, but from a purely tactical point of view if we want to move forward as a team we need a different profile of player in there.

A young injury free James McCarthy would be perfect for this current team.

….i’m with the transition to better quality in possession but that will take a while given what we have. Not sure that total change will happen during Moyes tenure.

Just need some young legs around him in a 3 man midfield .....

I’d like to see us move to a single sitting midfielder and two either side going up and down. I think out the current players Garner could play holding mid and Iroegbunam and Alcaraz the two attacking players. It’s worth a go in the last few games once we’re safe.

I’m just not sure that two DMs with a number 10 cuts it if you’ve not got pace out wide. Just turns into 4411 and the midfield two getting outnumbered by an opposition’s three.

Not many Lee Carsley style class players around sadly though ......
