You are not alone DutchToffee. I also highly rate Howard as I have said before. He also has to deal with being USA's #1 - whose porous backline sometimes puts Everton to shame, and he keeps the USMNT in games too. To rate him not good enough for the EPL is mindboggling imo. The vast majority of folks think Everton is lucky to have him. I'm in that majority.

As for the story - it's laughable. Brad Guzan (USA's #2 GK) is Friedel's heir apparent. And he will be #1 at Villa - he's quite decent and Villa doesn't want him to go anywhere.

Hi Guys,

Hows it going? Wanted to introduce myself as this is my first reply ever.

I've been following Howard ever since I saw a program on TV about an american apart of the starting 11 of one of biggest clubs in the world, man u. (At least one of the biggest clubs that I have ever heard about it at the time. No, I've never liked them.)

An American? BS. But sure enough, there was Tim Howard in that goofy yellow kit and with a shiny bald head. I was an instant fan. When he moved to Everton, I started to follow the team and thats when I fell in love with the club and its players. Its always better to root for the under dog and under dog is the best description of everton that I know of.

You can argue that Tim Howard is crap or Tim Howard is the man all day long. What I observe is that the man plays well for Everton most games but he is ace for USMNT. Ask any US fan who their best player is and the majority will say Howard. It's strange really. If he played that well for every everton game, there would be more forums on discussing whether Tim Howard is the heir apparent to Southhall's reign as the best keeper Everton ever had.

I believe that Tim Howard a lot of this has to do with his status on USMNT and what being USA's number one means to him. The man is clearly in control. He doesn't wear the captain's arm band but he should. He commands respect from his teammates and he gets it. When he shouts something, his back four listens and gets in line. His fans are numerous, the media (when they give a damn about USMNT) love him. He's at the top of the pecking order on that team and that confidence shows with every match.

On Everton however, if Neville got transferred and another player was chosen as Captain, how many players would get the arm band before Howard? Quite a few. He doesn't command the same sort of respect on the team as he does on USMNT. His confidence therefore just isn't as high.

I don't know what it would take to change that. I believe he has the potential to be the best in the PL. But it would take more than just drills to do it.

howard is average, but thats good enough for an average everton side, seems a decent bloke so cant bring myself to hate him, but he irratates the life out of me,

I find him to be a really charismatic guy, a strong athlete and in possession of some of those most important skills a goalkeeper should have. Here's a pro-and-con overview IMO:

Pros:
Athletic, tall and basketball-style player, suits the GK role.
Commanding player, communicates well with his back four.
Probably the keeper with the best reflexes in the prem.
Terrific at one-on-ones - if suitably prepared for them.
Great at long shots too, if his positioning isn't off.
Agile like a tiger - puts any 40-year old like VDS or Friedel to shame.

Cons:
Slightly volatile sometimes - not really gonna use the word mistake-prone, as he's not more prone than most others, but he has that tourette's air about him.
Tends to be badly positioned, though that can be blamed on unanticipated faults by the defence. Still, not solid here.
Not the strongest in the air, tends to get swamped, especially on corners and freekick crosses.
Looks really embarrasing when he gets embarrassed, flaps at the ball!

Yeah, the positioning thing is my biggest gripe with him. Guess it's rather clear that he's not as solid psychically/tactically in comparison to a more laid-back keeper like Cech or VDS. Though when it comes to considering the keeper as an athlete, he's defo one of the best. He'll probably never be a legend like the bin man, but he gets in line with Everton's long tradition of strong and talented goalkeepers. Maybe one day he smarts up and gains that extra tactical ability that sometimes might be lacking. One thing is for sure: He's worth far more than 4 mill. Also, Villa ain't gonna buy him, that's total rubbish. For some reason, the papers seem to think an american goalkeeper must be replaced by an american goalkeeper, completely ignoring the fact that Villa already have an american heir apparent in Guzan.

I think much of peoples opinion is based on how important they think a keeper is, for me its prob the most important position on the pittch that can earn you either or loose you 10 points a season. I think its fair to say most see Howard as compedent and good enough and more turned on by wingers or forwars, which is fair enough because they are definitely priorities. But there is a difference betwwen contentment and happiness.

Excellent points - and I think you may be onto something (although I rank him higher than some here) about his position within the team. I don't consider him the best player the team has (that's LD for me), but I think he's #2 - by a longshot. And yes, that means better than Dempsey (who I also adore).

Well, hey now. Congrats on your additional sponsor T Ho:

For me Howard has many positives and negatives. He's good enough for the Premier league, but if you look at all the sides above us (with the exception of Spurs), they've all got better keepers.
I suspect the younger generations are the ones who are happiest with Howard, primarily because they don't remember Big Nev in his pomp and therefore the standards of goalkeeping some of the rest of us remember.

He needs to command his box better that is his only weakness in my eyes

Command of his box, and lapses in concentration in some matches where he gets beaten from long shots. You can tell sometimes he's simply not ready for some of them. Would bite your hand off for Shay Given.

I'd take Shay in a heartbeat.

I'm a tad biased though, with the Irish thing.
