Homeopathy

I think the whole area of pain relief is very interesting. Why is there such a varation in tolerance to pain?

I do not think pain tolerance one way or the other demonstrates strength or weakness. For me I have on the rate occasions I have experienced pain relied upon mental techniques rather than reach for medication. I can count on one hand the number of times I have reached out to the drug cabinet.

I'm of this view. Unless the pain is preventing functioning, why reach for a drug?

Gut feeling suggests tolerance to pain can be managed and that it can't be healthy to be popping paracetamol for mild headaches etc.

I was prescribed Panadol Forte after knee surgery, took 4 and stopped because they spaced me out so much.

Arnica isn't homeopathy though mate, it's herbal and some of those things can work. Aspirin based meds (Ibuprofen for eg) are derived from the bark of willow trees and Digoxin (heart med) is from the digitalis plant (foxglove I think).

Obviously I'm always going to recommend the officially licensed medical option but some (obviously not all) herbal things can work.

Homeopathy is nonsense entirely. It's just water and a con. Don't confuse homeopathy with herbal things.

Groucho, the wise voice of reason yet again. I'll add my plug for making sure your healthcare providers always know about any OTC medications, herbals or homeopathy you use.

A relatively newer medication, exenatide (marketed as Byetta in the US) is also a great example of being derived from nature. It's a synthetic protein from the saliva of a Gila monster.

Plenty of other examples as well including cancer and HIV therapies.

Which ones and what from?

I was car sick as a child - would ralph as soon as I got in a vehicle.

Nothing could stop it.

One homeopathic remedy (petroleum) stopped it dead and I have never had it since.

You can say psychological or placebo but I was 8 and had tried all sorts. This was the only one that worked.

I believe aspirin (willow tree based) and ibuprofen (synthetic) are not the same thing.

Placebo effect, no real harm in it, but placebo is all it is.
Don't knock the placebo effect by the way. Even when people know they're taking something as a placebo it often helps.

Yeah, the placebo effect is powerful. It shows an effect in minimizing/eliminating the symptoms of Parkinson's disease among many others. The Nocebo effect is also important. It is perhaps a factor in the whole gluten-free craze. If you think something is harmful, then avoid it, you will feel better. So instead of ingesting a substance (placebo) that will have no effect on your physiology but makes you feel good, you are avoiding a substance (nocebo) that is likely to have no effect on your physiology but makes you feel good.
