That's what happens when a pass is played from one team's zone and it goes through the three lines in the middle to the other team's zone without the team who sent the puck from their zone getting a touch on it before the opposing team does.

This rule prevents a team from defending a lead by simply clearing their lines, or hoofing it every time they get the puck.

Not quite. Icing is called when one team sends the puck from its own side of the centre red line past the opposition's goal line without it touching an opposing player. A short-handed team cannot be called for icing, however. And icing is waved off at even strength if an attacking player is deemed able to get to the puck ahead of a defender. (It used to be that a defending player, apart from the goaltender, had to touch the puck before icing was called; now it simply has to cross the goal line with a defender well ahead of an attacking player in any "race" to the puck. Much safer that way; there have been some horrendous crashes into the end boards cause by a race for the puck.)

Yes, but the Canadian media desperately wants the Leafs to do well so the RS comp is appropriate. (It was either them or Pittsburgh on account of the Penguins’ enduring and supreme good luck... like them somehow winning the right to draft Sidney Crosby when every team in the league had the same odds of getting that pick.)

The Rangers are a better comp for Everton. They also haven’t won anything for a long time, haven’t won as much as Toronto historically, often sign big names past their prime, and try to fix everything with money and fail.
I'd say the Canadiens are a better fit for the RS than the leafs. Won loads but it was all in the past so nobody cares and everyone rolls their eyes when they go on about it.

They also have their own media love-in but it's mostly just in Quebec

As for comparisons, I’m sticking with my Everton = Islanders theory. Dominant in the 80s, rabid fan base, play second findle to a media love-in regardless of how bad the Rangers may be.

If only the Blues could find their own Barry Trotz.

Oh, I have something for you paperboy

This was performed when Trotzy was with the Caps, but it's still as good/terrible as ever

Did they change the icing rule when they tried to get away with the neutral zone trap, or was that the 2-line pass, or are these the same thing (or does the 2-line pass not exist?).

Anyway, I know loads about der Ice Hockey.

The NHL got rid of the two-line pass (from inside one's own zone to over the red line) in 2004-05 during the lockout. It was a way to generate more offence and neutralize the neutral zone trap somewhat. That's why you see so many of what's called "stretch" passes from inside a team's zone to as close to the opposition blue line as possible. It's as close to cherry-picking (or goal-hanging) as you'll see in hockey.

The Leafs are very much like Everton -- original founding members of the league, wear blue and white, won tons in the past but fack all lately. The only difference for me is I'm not a Leafs fan.

Of all the sports followers, football fans should understand hockey the most...find it baffling some can't make sense of it. I find hockey players to generally be the most down-to-earth of all pro athletes in major sports as well, despite the fighting stigma...it's probably because they DO fight, there's a bit more humility about. I haven't followed religiously in a long while but would never turn down an opportunity to play or go to a game.

The game's almost MADE for scousers...this happened last night. Young kid takes on a veteran in a dumb move...equivalent would probably be Lookman trying to square up Ibra.

The two-line pass was eliminated in 2005, severely weakening the neutral zone trap. Now you can pass from your own end all the way up to a waiting player at the opposing blue line (called a “stretch pass”) and it’s legal. Before, the player could not be across the red line if you did that. So you would then overload the first half of the neutral zone with defenders, and there was nowhere to pass the puck. Now the defense has to cover a much bigger area and it’s easier to get through.

Icing is when you intentionally shoot the puck down the ice from your own half of the rink. This is usually done when you are under pressure and trying to clear your lines. If you ice the puck, the faceoff comes back to your defensive area and you cannot put fresh players in the game. Icing rules do not apply when you are killing a penalty (shorthanded).
