The problem is that although the virus appears erradicated it can survive in certain fluids in the body which is undetectable by blood or urine or other tests....

Thats what traditional drugs do, they keep the count down in the T-Cells that are infected.

It'll take months to continue the testing of the man before he can be claimed to be "cured".

Also what that doesn't say... if you read the medical journal abstract...

Is that:

" However, it was expected that the long-lived viral reservoir would lead to HIV rebound and disease progression during the process of immune reconstitution..."

but also "Furthermore, during the process of immune reconstitution, we found evidence for the replacement of long-lived host tissue cells with donor-derived cells indicating that the size of the viral reservoir has been reduced over time. In conclusion, our results strongly suggest that cure of HIV has been achieved in this patient."

What this ACTUALLY means is - that this does not totally eradicate the virus.

It increases the time between relapse between treatments. the virus is still present... but is kept in check by the Stem Cell transplant for much much longer than conventional treatments.

It therefore means that periodic transplants will be needed throughout the patients life.

In order to "stay cured"

So it's not a "cure" - it's a new form of treatment for the disease. It will reduce mortality rates. Those with HIV will live normal lifespans.

BUT IT WON'T CURE THEM. And they can still infect other people!!!!
