I was up with the Gods at the Man City game in the Top Balcony and got to witness Everton from a whole 'new angle' from my usual Upper Bullens/ Upper Glwadys view.
We were a shambles yesterday. I have to agree with most of the comments on here. Hibbert and Osman are just not Premier League class players. Too light weight, too easily sucked out of postion and Hibbert's inability to cross a ball is laughable. Too many times, I saw players 'switching off'. Yobo, once our find of the seaon and a rock at the heart of the central defence, made so many school boy errors it was hard to beleive he was once courted by Arsenal and many others and is the captain of Nigeria. Tiredness could not be counted as a factor.
Maybe yesterday will be the short in the arm we need to improve our game - or maybe it was just a bad day at the office and a bit of a reality check when we come off the back of two great perfomances.
But Moyses' treble subsitution was baffling - I've never seen him deploy the panic button in such a way. And replacing Castillo when he was clearly holding the midfield together in his own unique 'no frills way' was also confusing, when Osman was screaming to be replaced and put on a bus home.
It didn't bide well for the Final, but at least it's still weeks away - but the squad is getting weaker by the day and the tactics and performance yesterday won't have Fat Frank and his prima dona pals shaking in their boots anymore - unlike they did the other night at Stamford Bridge.

I thought Moyes showed bolloxs with his triple subs. He had to get some balance in the team, Saha and Fellaini where struggling and he had to replace 1 of our defensive midfielders, it was never going to be Neville. I think it was the right thing to do. It allowed Ossie to move move central and gave us the brute force of Cahill and Vaughan.
They both started on fire and credit to City they saw the threat and calmed the game down with a few meaty challenges which made the ref on his toes and made us tone down our game.
Any chance we had went when Jags got injured. Everybody is always quick to critise Moyes for not making subs. I think he made the right subs at the right time.

Tony Hibbert this season is one of our most improved players. Most games he has forwards in his pocket. Its only really two games where I've seen him beaten for dust.
Ossie's problem is that he is inconsistent. He may claim that he can play across the midfield, but his best position is central midfield, and in reality there is too much competition in that area.
I think the "knee jerk" claim comes when people start talking about selling players. Football is now a squad game. THe sooner we realise that the less we'll get "sell him" posts.
Everton have one of the smallest squads in the premiership.
If you sell Hibbert, you'd need a back up to Jacobsen. Do we need to spend scarce resources on another full back? If you sell Osman, you'd need to purchase another midfielder with money that we may not have. Result - the squad size doesn't change though you may have increased the skill base, which would be positve - unless of course they get injured.
We need to increase the squad size so that when a player does play bad, or when we have a run of injuries like this season, we can quickly integrate new players into the style of play.
In an ideal world, players like Ossie and Hibbert would either step up to the mark, or find another club, or find themselves in the stiff, but this is not an ideal world, we live in the real world, and if we are to challenge for honours, we need a much bigger squad.

Lets not beat about the bush here, Leon Osman has been pathetic this season. End of story. People say our season has been great considering the start and injuries we have had. Its even more remarkable when you consider most games we have effectively only had 10 men with Osman being that anonymous and offering absolutely nothing, apart from the Macclesfield and Wigan matchs.
His worse season by some distance. Yesterday exemplified his performance. Gosling should be playing ahead of him.

I hate all these sell player posts, our squad depth is none existent, to be honest I wish people would just appreciate how well we have done considering our lack of players. Our single biggest problem is that we dont have enough good players, this is why the likes of rodwell, gosling, vaughan etc all get so much match time, we have no other options.
This in mind it just makes it more laughable that after one dissappointing game there are calls to sack our current 1st team right side. I'm not saying that osman and hibbert are quality players, to be honest they probably fit in a mid table side but like people say they can perform against lower table sides. What we need is to keep the likes of hibbert and osman and buy other replacements, then we can actually rotate our squad a little for when we have 4 games in two weeks and prevent tired performances like the city game. As for Saha, quality player but inconsistent, i think we all know he is a stop gap for a season where we had no money left and a shortage of strikers, likely is he'll be gone regardless this summer.

Hibbert has improved tremendously this season, and it's only been in his last 2 games he's struggled recently. Osman has had a poor season which is a shame as I thought he was our most improved last season.
We need a bigger squad if we want to compete next season so selling Hibbert and Osman isn't an option really.

Just to make this crystal clear for some on here . I am not saying get rid of Hibbert & Osman off the back of yesterday . I would never in a million years say something like that after a bad game . I have however been of the view that Hibbert is sub standard for YEARS . I have also never been keen on Osman for a long , long time . It is coming to a head now because of where we find ourselves . We can NO LONGER afford to carry suspect players . We are genuinely going places . The top four affords no passengers whatsoever , to do so will see us drop back to where we came from as they are ruthlessly exploited as Hibbert was yesterday .
Some supporters need to wake up and drag themselves out of there collective apathetic state of mind . You need to constantly progress and improve in this league . You need to keep pace . You need to constantly break new ground . Look at what Cahill has done this season , look at Jags , at Baines and pienaar . That my friends is our new level of performance . Sorry, very long answer to hibbert / ossie thread....
First no, I don't go as regular as I'd like to, hope that does not disbar me from having an opinion.
Hibbert last season:
(1)Lead in his boots. Couldn't pass five years without thumping the ball. Often misplaced his passes, must have the lower pass completion rate in the prem.
(2)Used the same weight to pump the ball into the penalty area. Normally the ball would fly over the goal or to the corner flag.
(3) Positional sense, seems to drfit into the centre
(4) Going forward, you'd fear him going forward as he'd lose possesion too easily and be caught out.
Hibbert this season:
(1) short passes reach an Everton player
(2) Makes more telling passes into the box
(3) Positional sense, in my view this hasn't improved.
(4) Much more positive going forward, looks for a pass and can make room to cross (did he not get an assist yesterday?)
The tackling is still top notch, and its only been two games that he's been run ragged because he has no pace. He maybe a squad player, but he's not rubbish, and I dare you to say that based on the above he has not improved.
Ossie has been plain inconsistent and momentarily improved with the arrival of Pienaar. Ossie is one of our most skilful players, but needs competition to help him buck up his ideas, plus he's not playing in his best position.
When playing on the right Arteta this season was not that much better. His corners and crosses and free kicks were rubbish. He seemed to want to do a Peter Beagrie on a player before he could cross the ball. Beating the first opponent when he crossed the ball seemed to have become a loss art for him.
On his inconsistent performances should we have sold him? No, the management put him in the middle and now Arteta is god again.
If we had someone else on the right I wouldn't be surprised to see Ossie improve if we put him in the middle, but the reality as I've said before is that we have a small squad, and we suffer because we have to play players who in an ideal world would be dropped.
Not every team in the prem have world class players in every position in their club. I can only think of 3 players from the rs who i'd put anywhere near our first team.

Maybe not if you were like me watching him through both hands placed firmly over your face . Uniteds formation at Wembley practically begged for Hibbert to attack that gapping space along the flank . Baines saw his chance but alas Hibbert had his usual nose bleed once he reached the half-way line . Can Hibbert cross a ball ? In a word no . Can Hibbert pass a ball more than 10 metres so that it reaches its target ? Only when he hasnt been smoking crack .

To be fair, Hibbert's crossing is dismal, i think i counted 4 or 5 that went sailing over the sideline. I think Jacobsen (if not injured) should be given a chance to prove his worth until the end of the season. Not a knee - jerk reaction either, i rate Hibbert as a defender and he has improved going forward ie against Wigan, however yesterday was a poor poor effort.

He's the fullback you want when your up against someone like Downing, Riera or Petrov. Left footed wingers who are always looking to get to the byline and get a cross in. Hibbert pisses all over these players, he makes mince meat out of them.
He seems to struggle against right footers who play on the left and cut inside. Players like Robinho or Young although he did do well against Ronaldo at Old Trafford. Usually though that's not the case.
He's useful, he's had a good season but there's no doubting Phil Neville should play right back next season, I'm sure he will.
