surely we have to break the cycle sometime. Hopefully it won't be a reverse trend where we start great and fizzle out and finish down the bottom half. consistency is not too much too ask is it, a full season from our players/manager would be nice.

Oops formatting issues there. And it was actually 3rd, my apologies. Statto.com can't count

We finish the season well = People think we can play good passing football and score plenty of goals.

The expectation to begin well from fans/media/football colleagues gets put onto Moyes' shoulders = Moyes sh*ts himself and we don't put a run together until February, when we're out of both cup competitions and probably 11th...were no-one then expects us to do anything.

Basically it's this, and any manager worth his salt would be able to stop such a rot happening to his team 4 years on the spin, but not our one.

More likely due to the fact we get raped for our best players on the eve of the season.
Not moyes fault surely.

The Manchester clubs will take 1st and 2nd again next year. Chelsea will spend and take 3rd.

IF we have a good summer ie pienaar Donovan minimum......

Everton liverpool(if they sack kk) spurs arsenal will be fighting for 4th.

And not having European football could well be our ace up our sleeve.

There's something quite misleading about these half-season tables. They quite clearly point to some psychological problems in our squad, but it doesn't necessarily mean that if we just had a good start we'd be challenging the top four. Every side this season has had a significant slump, and the same is true every other season for virtually every side. We just happen to have slumped early in each of the last few seasons.

Spot on that mate.

Delusional to think we could carry the post Christmas form for a whole season. We dont have the mindset for that.

We kind of talked about our starts to the season and what affects it.

Losing big players late in the transfer window has an affect- its the only thing I can put my finger on as to why the slow starts.

No one can deny that we have had a strong finish to the season beating Man City, Spurs, Newcastle, Chelsea and drawing with United. If we get our early season form sorted I am sure if we keep the same group of players we will have a much better season.

The Mikel Arteta who couldn't beat his first man/the wall from set plays? Only pass sideways and daudle in possession?
The Yakubu that scored 7 goals in 2 seasons?
...James Vaughan & Jermaine Beckford?

Arteta 2006-2009 and 2007/8 Yakubu I would have given you, but not these two sorry shadows.

Moyes has made us into some of the best underdogs around, but in turn it's why we'll never thrive under pressure.

The media saying we were the favourites for the Wembley Semi Final and the sh*thouse performance that followed basically proves me right.

I know we're going in circles on this Moyes stuff but just for curiosity:

Why isn't there any manager "worth his salt" good enough to finish above Moyes consistently? This year it was the usual assortment of big money spenders (plus Newcastle ... although they do spend a fair amount [-14m net this year] thanks to the anti-moneyball RS ... plus it's just one good year ... Villa might have finished above us once or twice but it wasn't a harbinger of further success).

None of the "poor" clubs have any consistent success. Even if we define "success" as seventh-place (purely to enrage Davek) -- even at that depressing, slice your wrists open and pour bleach in the wounds definition of success ... even by those hideous low standards there are teams who spend tens of millions more than us (yes even including wages too) and can't manage even seventh. Their managers must have been absolute disasters -- and those are some of the managers whom the person we all trust 100% to make smart decisions, Bill Kenwright, would be considering if we lost Moyes. Sleep well.

I suppose if we don't blame managers it would be to give in to the grim reality of the relationship between money and success (which some of us gave in to about ten years ago). In the Prem you can't win without money -- I remember arguing with people years ago about this and not a single thing has happened since that has given me pause to reconsider. I keep hearing about people talk about this year being so "surprising" -- if you look at spending in the last 5 years http://www.transferleague.co.uk/league-tables/2006-2011.html one of the most surprising results might be our seventh place finish (which is a massive failure according to many). Arsenal spend 100m+ on wages so their finish isn't that surprising. Chelsea finishing sixth might be the most surprising but then again they are in the CL final so it's hardly a lost season for them. Newcastle had a great year no doubt -- we'll see if it can be sustained -- and they were in a lower division a few years ago so hard to envy them (you might this year but in ten/twenty years, if this is their high point, they did less than we did). We also just ran over them when they desperately needed a win -- it's possible they aren't that good.

You can spend money and fail but you can't succeed without spending money. I sincerely hope someone will prove me wrong but I've been waiting a long time.

Plenty of people have proved you wrong it's just you define your parimeters as so narrow they don't fit.

Forest and Derby won the leagues on limited budgets but that was before the last twenty years so it doesn't count, Montpellier are likely to do it this year but that wasn't in England so it doesn't count. Leicester won two trophys but that was the cups not the league so it doesn't count.

You've narrowed the selection of data you're analysing so much that there's not enough to come to an conclusion. It's the same logic that led people to argue that the top 4 would never be broken and then it turned out that not all trends continue forever and Liverpool haven't finished in the top 4 for three years.
