2025/26 Harrison Armstrong

….great passer of a football but him and Kendall were not the type to make themselves a big goal threat in the top third. His shooting was actually quite poor, not surprising given his notoriously bandy legs, he only scored 18 in over 300 games but he did get a few important goals.

He was very classy but played in a time when many of the top midfielders were close to being thugs (Bremner, Giles, Stiles, McKay etc) so he was tough although you rarely hear fans talk of that dimension with him because he was so classy. I do think Harvey worked with Kendall a bit like Reid worked with Bracewell, and their career stats reflect that.

Top, top player and I’d say the best football coach the club has ever had, so a great understanding of the game.
As someone once explained it to me Kendall was the engine Ball was the spark but Harvey was the oil and they worked so well as a unit.

I must admit My brother & I & his mates followed them most games home & away just to see them & the team 1968 - the gelled - CH states they played beautiful crisp football that season probably better than 1969/70 in our championship season as the trio were split up in phases that season injury, suspension of Bally etc -

Opposition fans would be aghast at half time as we would be in front with fantastic football - they in some grounds would get clapped off by home supporters plus thousands of away traveling fans - My only joy was I witnessed it - home games it was how many will we score today etc we lost the odd game , but definitely scientific class football - not a hoof ball in sight .....

We just knew the title would come & it did ;)

Midfield is the engine room of any great team ..... Bally was world class....

ATM we need an engine room in the middle not two defensive midfielders ...

….i suppose our two greatest teams had two DMs in Kendall/Harvey and Reid/Bracewell, lots of games but very few goals between all four.

I have no problem with central midfielders contributing little by way of goals but those teams were particularly potent in wide areas with even CBs (Hurst/Mountfield) providing goals.

They were all over the pitch Eggs - Box to Box .... we miss two good full backs to at present ...

We need players like Bruno and Tonali from Newcastle in our midfield. They can do everything.

Those players were good/great on the ball. Gana, for all his qualities, is really bad at passing.

Absolutely agree with this! I'm a little too young for the great 60s side but grew up watching our fantastic 80s team. Reid and Bracewell were a pleasure to watch. Goals came from all over the pitch, but those two covered every blade of grass pushing us on. Also have to remember both sides had quality everywhere and a winning mentality. Something to aspire to!

….times change but I always think that team is a decent blueprint for any club manager to try and replicate.
