Halfway point of the season

No, no they couldn't. They don't have the players or the ambition to play in the right manner.

Maybe it's time to recognise that you don't solve the defensive weakness by stopping the attacking football, which seems to be the idea behind all the critical posts. It's dead easy to fix and it involves a bold managerial decision. It's not about balance at all, it's about taking the GK out of the equation.

Those other teams are nowhere near Everton's level of ability. Stop selling your own team short and back them.

The reason we leak goals is our system and tactics,i wonder if you ever watch us play because you just will say anything to protect your master.
You used to be so credible on here and now people laugh at you.
I wonder if you are on some kind of wind up cos your bored

Halfway point thoughts in 140 characters or less each

Lukaku is a beast; having fun watching him play
Del sure can whip in a cross; he's not heading back to Barca, fun to watch him in Blue
I'm ok with Stones leaving in August, but wish he'd stick around
Barkley seems to be progressing fine; still a long way to go, but seems to be doing the small things better
Still need a competent LW if Mirallas isn't going to feature; Kone shoots as well as I do
Like how the younger players have done well when given a chance; hope we see a few more in the new year
Wish RM would reinstall his season 1 tactics; attack needs 3-4-3 shape, but current shape leaves CBs dreadfully exposed
Wish Robles was given a chance, but sticking by Howard isn't Martinez' biggest problem
Points dropped; last year the squad was too thin to handle the league, but this year tactics are missing

Flattering to de ive this season for me - turbo gash at the back, McCarthy and Jags have been huge misses.

Really not a fan of Mori as things stand, I expect more for 10 mill on a defender.

read that since september, Stoke have picked up the most points apart from city in the league or something like that.

and they are 10th. bit crazy like!

Last 14 games:

Won 7
Drawn 5
Lost 2

Scored 30
Conceded 18 (four clean sheets)

  • Within striking distance of Euro place
  • One decent result away from Wembley in the LC
  • Into Round 4 of the FA Cup

Good vein of form we're in right in the middle of the season. Some injured players back into the fold too.

Happy days.

Staying consistent with your opening post, of course, which was about the league...
Maybe this thread could be used for any thoughts people have on performance and expectations (what's gone on/how we've performed in the first half of the season and how it matches/surpasses/falls short of their expectations) and what can be expected in the second half of the season?

I'll kick it off in terms of a look at where we've been before at previous season halfway points (last decade) and where we eventually ended up.

Halfway position and points (and in brackets end of season position and points):

2015/16 10th 26pts (................)
2014/15 12th 21pts (11th 47pts)
2013/14 4th 37pts (5th 72pts) EL Qualification
2012/13 6th 33pts (6th 63pts)
2011/12 11th 24pts (7th 56pts)
2010/11 11th 22pts (7th 54pts)
2009/10 11th 22pts (8th 61pts)
2008/09 6th 29pts (5th 63pts) EL Qualification
2007/08 6th 33pts (5th 65pts) EL Qualification
2006/07 8th 27pts (6th 58pts) EL Qualification

This season so far fits in pretty much with the average of the decade at halfway mark in terms of position and points at the turn.

We're obviously playing great attacking football and Keystone Cops defensive football. It'd be nice to think January would bring movement. We need a decent second striker to slot in when the inevitable Lukaku injury comes along and a GK of any note to take over from Howard - although the latter looks unrealistic.

I'm standing by my 60+ point finish and good cup runs as the benchmark of a good season. We'll get them and it'll be a very decent marker down by a developing young team.

6 wins, 19 games (20 now of course), good chance of a final, did the easy bit against lower league opposition.

Now we know how you HATE selective stats Dave, so let's have the full picture.

Good win today, nice and professional

No real arguments from me, but if brutally honest 3 or 4 points more I would of been more than happy
On the right tracks and hopefully get stronger in the 2nd half of the season

No, that's not true. I mentioned the cup runs also.

It's a fine wedge of form right in the middle of the season. 14 games with two reversals.

Since we lost at Arsenal I'm calling our effort 8/10.

Heading in the right direction, and hopefully a few reinforcements in the window

Pienaar being back is a massive boost, as the left hand side has been an issue
Pienaar back, Oviedo a decent game (maybe slots in at RB if Coleman is out for a long spell). Jagielka back in the fold. If we can shove Naismith and a few others out the door and add two in this window we're in great shape to kick on.

Big strides in the cups, work to do in the league. Looking more solid with Robles and Besic but we've been here before and the lessons weren't heeded. Crucial period coming up, we could still have a very good season if Martinez has learnt the lessons of the last 18 months.

If we have another 14 game period like this last one we'll be in very good shape.

We need this very healthy goal scoring / goals conceded ratio to keep up. If we do that then we can achieve something very good this season.

Form guide from the past 14 games in terms of a comparison with those above us right now.

Only 4 clubs have won more times than Everton; only 2 clubs have lost less. I suppose it shows that the draws are key to progress, but the win/losses are very, very respectable.
