Guardian preview of our season

Obviously there is often a correlation between money spent and postion finished, but thats not always the way as we've often shown.

Look at our money spent to Man Cities. We spent in the last 5 years £63 million and they spent £637 million.

Thats 10 times more than us for all you maths boffins. Is their squad 10 times better than ours? No. Did they get 10 times the points we did in the last 5 years? No.

They're better obviously but the difference is nowhere near as big as the figures suggest.

Not to take away from how difficult it is to achieve what we did for the money and how easy it was for city but it just shows that if you spend what money you have wisely you can do a lot better per pound than someone spending stupid amounts of money.

Its not how much you spend but what you spend it on.

the biggest correlation is on wages spend, not transfers

I agree we don't have the right players to break away from the dark ages mindset of "40 points first".

The RM pass and move game based on skill, creativity and incision will need many changes and fans knowing only Walter and Moyes fear football might collapse under the pressure.

But the bigger picture is a future successful EFC (y'know winning something!!!)... we couldn't continue schlepping along like some kinda footballing down and out for another decade... (shudders at the thought).

Totally agree, the squad alone is more than capable of finishing 8th on its own, with Bill in charge.

Anything more is a plus, anything less would be dissapointing, but no need to press the panic button, im gonna moan and cry for most of the Season, but im willing to give him a Season, to bed himself in, next Season I will be demanding a little more, but at the end of the day hes still got the same glass ceiling that Moyes had.

This ^^^^^^^^......

I didn't realise how little the media rates Martinez until I started reading the pre-season write ups.

For me the biggest problem is going to be distribution from the centre backs. I'm expecting to see Everton concede a fair few goals from poorly placed passes out of defence.

Thought the Guardian piece was a great read, I was fully expecting it to be we wont cope without Moyes, plucky Everton blah blah.

Would love see wages vs wins for the previous ten years--any idea where to find wages for such a long period?

*Have found a source, will be back...
