I'm struggling to visualise a midfield of Fernandinho, Casemiro and Paulinho as world champions myself.

They're not exceptional of course but they're workhorses that will allow the attacking talent to do their own thing. Think they have a nice balance - combined with a centre-half pairing of Thiago Silva and Marquinhos that play together well at club level.

I think man for man Germany are stronger but I just feel they're predictable now too and prone to a hiccup in the knockout stage.

And with France, any side that has Kante and Mbappe in will have a tremendous chance in a knockout format.

..amazed that Manchester City’s Leroy Sane hasn’t made the German squad, they must have some team.

Not that amaazing really. He's barely played for Germany yet, and what he has played he's not really made an impression. Plus he turned down the chance to go to the Confederations Cup last year so missed on a great opportunity to get some games under his belt for the national team to make an impression. Löw already said he'll be a big part of things moving ahead into the European Championship, so he will get his chances then. Löw is going with Reus, Draxler, Brandt and Werner for those position for this tournament. And Brandt, Reus and Werner give him far more versatility as they can play centrally too.

Sané's stats for Germany

Games 12,
Starts 6,
Minutes 592
Goals 0
Assists 1

Such impressive stats - maybe there is a reason Joachim Löw didn't pick him!

Why would you? Obviously does **** all for them.

According to one German reporter a lot of German commentators although surprised can perfectly understand this as he's underperformed every time he's been in the German squad and there's a feeling he just doesn't fit into the German manager's plans

Exactly, the fuss about it seems to be more from outside Germany I guess. Yes, people surprised, but it isn't a big deal. If he'd left someone like Müller or Kroos out, then there would have been uproar! He's left out a squad player, who would have been a sub and maybe only getting a couple short appearances in the tournament.

If Sané had gone to the confederations cup last summer, he probably would have played a lot of games, and it would have been the perfect time for him to show what he can do and to learn better the different way Germany play and their tactics etc. I think there is a little suggestion too that he's got a little bit too big for his boots this season, and wasn't exactly pushing himself hard in training these past few days. He'll be ok though, he's not been frozen out. He's 22, he can still play 2 world cups and 2 European championships for Germany in his career.

...just had a few quid on Plattenhardt to score the first goal for Germany @ 35-1 (Ladbrokes price boost). Well, he could be an Everton player and he hits a wicked free kick. Come on Marvin.

So 2 players we have been linked with starting next game, Plattenhardt number 2 German left back and Mexico 22 Lozano left wing

Eight European teams have played so far with none losing (5 wins, 3 draws - Portugal vs Spain and Iceland's draw with Argentina)

Yet when we move to the proposed 48 team World Cup, Europe's percentage representation is due to be cut so that teams from areas of the world who keep losing can have a lot more

I actually think Mexico have a chance in this one as they're a very decent side themselves and Germany have had only stuttering form leading into this World Cup amidst some discontent from their own fans.

The World Champions invariably turn up at summer tournaments though, and even if they didnt win here will still be fancied to recover and still be one of the likely winners.
