Technically that would only be correct if you used 'The Republic', as 'Southern' Ireland would literally mean the south part of 'Ireland', which obviously couldn't be more Northerly than the 'Northern'!
In Northern Ireland we refer to the Republic as the South and ourselves as the North.The South do the same.
