It wasn't actually Cromwell who initiated the ban, but it was under his reign as Lord Protector and you'd expect that him a Puritan would have approved of it.

Also, Christmas wasn't banned as such: rather, it was meant to be observed as a solemn occasion, so feats and joyous occasions were banned.
