John McAdam is often said to be the inventor of tarmacadam (tarmac) but this is in fact is wrong. McAdam pioneered new techniques in road building, using various layers of different sized crushed rocks. However, it was over 80 years later that a Welshman, Edgar Hooley, had a patent issued for his new road surfacing material, tarmacadam, designed to be the top layer sealing in the small stones.
