John Frusciante and Mark Knopfler, inspired me to pick up the guitar.

Coming from drums.

Danny Carey of Tool, Bonzo of Zeppelin. Then of course Neil Peart my absolute favorite, Keith Moon and so many others I could name.

For underrated: Jimmy Chamberlain of the Smashing Pumpkins.
Absolutely agree with this - Jimmy Chamberlain - very underrated.

Another underrated drummer - Jon Fishman - Phish.

I'll see myself out

Joe Vitale, Joe Walsh and Joey66. A hat-trick of Joes.
The eagles asked him to tour - he upset the drummer king leader of the Eagles - & got rollicked & warned he would be off the lucrative tour - The late Glen Frey asked him to do it again in the next concert - he refused as the wages were so high .....a great drummer Joe Vitale....

Is it fair to say that rock is not your bag but jazz definitely is?

Not entirely, i grew up on rock music but find it probably the most stale music on the planet nowadays. I'm not a massive jazz head either, I just love jazz drumming and find it to be much more rhythmically interesting and varied than rock drumming. That's not to say there aren't amazing rock drummers, there are... but if you're talking purely about technique and skill then Jazz is the genre to showcase it.

John Mylett, local lad, played in Nutz/Rage and was asked to join Marillion. Sadly him and his girlfriend died in a car wreck while on holiday in Greece in 1984. The Moonstone bar in St John’s precinct was renamed Mylo’s in his honour.
