Don't accept the bid and players don't leave... simple back in those days

Club faced same dilemma - player wants away, you have a decision to make. Lineker knew that. Apart from talent, he and Barmby had something in common.

The Vox Pop on Goodison Road the Beeb carried out at the time was quite revealing ... little or no animosity. General feeling was that he should stick to his contract, but that the world wouldn't end if he went.

Like most human beings, the standards Lineker sets for others are quite high, but a bit lower for himself, in my view.

I never said we were better with him in the team. I just said he doesn't speak ill of us and regards the team he played in as the finest of his career. Not the same thing :)

I neither thought nor suggested for a moment that you were saying that.

I was merely reinforcing your point about what Lineker says about EFC on MOTD :)

And pointing out that for a man whom scored thirty goals in one season he never really gets much recognition for it, by way of illustrating it.

I don't think Lineker had any thoughts of going anywhere else when he came to Everton. Circumstances changed
later and Barcelona came knocking.

Anyway, there weren't any greater things when he was here.

It is like everything else about football in this country in that era.

All overshadowded and tainted by Heysel.

And the Barcelona of that era were nowt like the Barcelona of today.

I reckon neither Gary nor Howard would have left but for the ban.

They would have been way too busy winning European Cups ;)

Lineker's comments were clearly just a bit of fun - Always comes across as having a soft spot for Everton and often saves his real barbs for himself, Shearer or ill advised Twitter digs everytime the Leicester board make an ultimately correct decision regarding appointments and sackings.

Le Saux on the other hand is just utterly clueless.

How could you not have a soft spot for a place where you scored 39 goals in a single season?:D

Was it Le Saux was punched by his own player one time?
