What make are you using for trail running, as trail shoes are the weirdest fit of any shoe ?

With nearly every brand, you need to at least " half a size up " > so if your a 9, you need a 9.5.

This is to allow for your socks getting wet and feet to swell.

Some brands have a really wide toe box, others are very narrow > get it wrong and you`ve got really sore feet / cramps.

lonsdales are superb value. 10 pairs for under 35 quid.

I'm using Mizuno and Brooks. The Mizuno are cushioned so good for more gravel based courses and the Brooks are full Trail. Brooks are a wider fit so five the extra space I need all the way round.

Brooks are excellent shoes.

Inov8 are very good too - massive range and a shoe for every surface / condition.

Plus they do a standard ( wide ) fit and a precision ( narrow ) fit.

They are also incredibly light, which makes a big difference when running on mud - less effort.

Salomon are also excellent, but tend to be used by the more serious runners.

cragghoppers mush..

I pretty much stick with Brooks and Mizuno as I've worn both makes for Distance running and never had an issue with them.

How many miles do you do in a pair before relegating them to Sunday walks and grass cutting duties?

Because they’re so expensive, I squeeze every last drop of life out of them. Mine normally fall to bits from the wet and the mud before the soles go.

If the outer goes last, I tend to bin them when I start to get aches in my knees that weren’t there before.

Generally I get about 6 - 9 months out of a pair, but I do mix and match the 4 pairs I’m running on at the mo -

Dry ( very cushioned Holka )

Damp ( cushioned Inov 8 )

Muddy ( lightly cushioned grippy Inov 8 )

Proper mud ( No cushioned but full grip New Balance )

Socks can make a big difference too ( as mad as it sounds ! ).

Have a look at :

Hilly.

Ininji.

They`re tailor made for trail / fell running, so the areas of your foot that take a pounding are cushioned, which combined with a good shoe makes a massive difference.

They aren`t cheap, but worth investing in a few pairs.

Don`t be put off by how weird the Iniji socks look, as they`re very very good.
