Some years ago, I had the pleasure of playing golf with Gordon Banks at the Belfry. What a lovely man as well as being England's best ever goalkeeper. RIP.

In these days of transitory, plastic legends, here is a proper one. A winner who was a consistent humble gentleman and without the need for showboating or histrionics to attract attention to himself. RIP.

Just getting up to this sad news, can't add much to the above comments, a genuine legend and hero yet just a down to earth guy who played for basically peanuts compares to today's lot, RIP Gordon Banks, thanks for the memories.

Pretty sure I was in that Bullens Road stand for the game as a kid...think we won 6-2 and it was before that World Cup Pele save. We were always good at welcoming opposition goalies, but none moreso than Gordon... the original Banksie. May he rest in peace.

Sad news. Here he is being applauded onto the pitch by Stoke and us, in recognition of being awarded the football writers' player of the year for 1971. One of only four goalkeepers to have won (others being Trautmann, Jennings and Southall).
