Fenway park's capacity has only increased from 33,000 to 37,000 between 2002 and 2014. We'd need to increase the capacity of Goodison by about 10,000 to make it worthwhile, as well as building much better hospitality options, it simply is not feasible to build a modern ground within the Goodison footprint. I don't care what KEIOC say.
I'm not talking about building a modern ground on the footprint, I'm talking about redeveloping the existing one. Yes, they only added 4 or 5 thousand to the capacity of fenway but they managed to completely remodel under the stands, add easy access and lots of corporate hospitality. The ground is used all year round for functions and events, they put on the floodlights so theres a great view in the background if you're having an event, It's suitable for 40,000 concerts. Of course it can be done.
Here's my (amateur) thoughts on how.
- Reinforce the gwladis st. end and Main stand to remove the polls.
- Run corporate boxes along the back of the lower bullens which would support the upper bullens.
- Reinforce the roof and remove the polls.
- Build out the back of the Park end where the annexe was supposed to go, this would be incorporated into the Park end stand and act as a base for a second tier on that stand as well as more boxes. Room below for museum/offices/hospitaltiy.
- Add new changing rooms, refs room below park end. This would free up food/drink space under the main stand.
- Add a tower similar to the Sampdoria ones at the corner of the park and bullens. More boxes and media facilities.
You've increased the capacity to about 45,000, added corporate boxes on two sides, added new concession areas, reduced the obstructed views by about 80% and kept what makes Goodison special.
I'll throw in the whole lot for one Fellaini and a Lescott.
