I agree about the failure to keep hold of the ball. It does my head in too. Obvioulsy a lot of it is to play to the grandstand. I think though that the change in the PL to GKs from Europe and South America especially has embedded this horrendous practice.

That said, that oaf we have in goal would have been doing us a favour by punching rather than trying to catch on Sunday.
Dave this was not intended to set you up to give Pickford stick especially as I like him please if you really have to contain that to the Everton forum, how about simply telling us who your favourite goalie is past or present I would find that a lot more interesting, cheers.

Shmeichel and Nev top 2 for me. Shmeichel edges it because of his distribution. Nev probably made better reaction saves. Both commanded the area and gave great confidence to the defence.

They palm the ball and make mistakes simply because modern football isn't as great as the media who sell the myth says it is.

Goalies aren't necessarily any better than 20 years age just because they're paid a kings ransom - in fact I'd say the quality has plummeted.
I think it's also to do with changes of the ball. It's lighter and moves in the air more which makes it unpredictable do trying to catch it is more risky

Perhaps.

I've often said to mates that I'd love to watch a match between 2 top sides full of lightweight tricksters, using a proper ball from the 80s or before.

I think they'd be flattened receiving the first pass, or go off for treatment with hurty toes after kicking it.

Theres no perhaps about it. I still play in goal and Ive had shots at me from outside the box, really hit hard, and I know I've got the right position but then the ball starts moving left, so you slightly correct your position or stance, then the ball moves hard to the right. I tell you no one else on the pitch sees that movement of the ball apart from maybe the guy who kicked it. If I can catch it I will, but when that ball moves you can look a clown really quick. Even trying to push it to the side is difficult. Like that guy said above, at times its like playing with a 1970s beach football.

My favourite goalie recently is Courtois. Nev used to say a goalie should never let others know what he is thinking. Courtois is a great goalie and also has that poker face.

Big Oggy.. don’t get a face like that without putting it where it hurts
It's amazing how many hot goalies we have these days, most of them back in the '90s had faces like a slapped arse. Ogrizovic was the poster boy. As was Big Nev, as much as I love him.

Apparently goalies in ye olde days used to get a lot of finger injuries until they changed the ball.

I remember those times when Timothy Howard would get lobbed about five times a season despite standing a yard off his line.

To be fair, he was good for us for a few years.

I will always remember the Sunderland match where he was right off his line, to the right side of the goal, and Jermaine Defoe happily banged it in from the left.

Well played, Tim.

On another level, Barrow had a keeper called Simon Bishop (used to play for Hartlepool in the North East masters series).

He was on the chubby side and at this time of year would complain to us that he was not allowed a proper Christmas dinner as he was constantly on diets. Anyway, he was a class act (for the level) and some of the saves he used to pull off defied belief. It was always funny to hear the calls of 'fat [Poor language removed]', 'who ate all the pies', etc. from opposition fans just before he saved a shot that was heading for the top corner. The look on their faces never let me down, they soon piped down and in most cases ended up clapping him at the final whistle.

My non Everton/Barrow keeper is easy, Schmeichel the elder. Just pure class in every aspect of the game.

My bad, it was the new balls giving goalies finger injuries. And they have more of a curve on them or something.
