Why are the drummers playing behind a clear perspex screen??

Its an acoustic thing, drums are load so the shield just stops the drums from over powering the sound of the vocals or guitars etc....don't know why some bands use it & other bands don't though..

So its not just to stop foreign objects ie: piss and bottles hitting the drums/ drummer?!
