Gerard Deulofeu

In fairness mate the quality of the AC Milan team he is starting for is not in the same league as the ones that won multiple European cups/Champions leagues.

I'd rather we kept him too, but I think it was Deulefeu who drove this as he wasn't content with a bit part from the bench. I also think he may have been a disruptive influence in the changing room too, given that he wasn't even making the squad at times in January. There's only one outcome in those scenarios.

However I think it was a big mistake to let him go out on loan without getting a like for like player in during the window, especially with Bolasie being out.

Massive conjecture there mate - absolutely nothing to suggest this was the case, always had a smile on his face and never uttered a bad word about the club or his treatment.

Glad he's getting regular football now and as much as it pains me to say @davek is right, he shouldn't have been on the bench waiting while the headless chicken (Bolasie) was on the pitch.

Who would you suggest is a like for like replacement to Deulofeu in our budget and would be willing to join us? bearing in mind when he was in form and confident he was assisting more goals than Silva and Ozil. By the sounds of it, he is doing well in Italy given a run of games and a pat on the head, 3 assists and a goal in 8 games? only 1 assist less than Bolasie in nearly half the minutes on the pitch.

You're right mate, it is conjecture on my part, although the wording could have been better I suppose. I meant more he may not have been putting the effort in on the training ground rather than trying to cause mischief amongst the players. I'm just trying to come up with an explanation as to why he was omitted from the squad altogether for a number of games before he got his loan move.

As regards the second part of your post, if you read mine again you'll see that I said I would rather we kept Del. I also said it was a big mistake to let him go out on loan without bringing in a similar type player, so I think we're both on the same page there. Aren't we? What I will add is that if he wants to get regular starts, he needs to get his fitness sorted out. If he doesn't, he will never be used as anything more than an impact player and, as I said, I don't think he'll be happy with that.

Disagree with you and @davek about Bolasie by the way, but that's just a matter of opinion that we're all entitled to.

I dont blame Deulofeu one bit. He'd be mad to come back here.

I see! I agree mate, he doesn't seem to be the kind of lad to 'put a shift in', seems for want of a better word 'spoilt'. Agree with everything you said bar the Bolasie bit ;) but like you say matter of opinion

I really don't think Koeman likes the typical continental player mate, regardless of ability. I'll be the first to say Deulofeu falls on his arse too much - needs to man up, however it should be coached out of him like Ferguson did to an extent with Ronaldo.

I wasn't blaming him mate:)

As for coming back here, he's still contracted to us so unless Milan put an offer in during early summer he'll be back here for pre season Dave. From what I understand there was no buy option included in the loan deal. Not sure who's idea this was or whether one couldn't be written in due to Barcas buy back clause.

Think we'll see him back in the summer though mate, at least for a short while.

Koeman wants consistency and Deulofeu is not the type to give that. He's a player that bursts into life a few times per game and sets up golden opportunities for others.

Some managers would covet that bit of magic he has in his boots; Koeman looks at it and wants more.

But sometimes - and this is one of them - less is more.

He might be back to clear his locker out. I highly doubt he'll play another game for us again.

I love Gerry, but he frustrates the living hell out of me. It would seem Koeman wants someone who can produce the magic more consistently, and I think he is right to want that. Bolasie definitely wasn't the answer to that question, but I trust that someone good is one the cards.

Ha. You're probably right, at least as regards competitive games.

Think it all depends on the fallout from this Barca clause. I'm sure it will restrict him signing for anybody else during the window, at least without their approval, but I'm not sure when that clause expires. What little I've seen just says this summers window but there may be a deadline within the window after which we can do what we want.

Correct. He wasted £27M on an inferior player to Deulofeu. Criminal waste of resources.

I dont see him adding to Lookman, Bolasie and Mirallas, tbh.

I think it's about how Koeman perceives their work ethic and attitude. On the pitch Bolasie does work hard even if his ability doesn't match his attitude, and we've seen too much of Gerry not tracking back and sulkingly pulling up his socks because something didn't pull off. Basically, if you could merge the two of them you would have a great player.

For the record, I think Mirallas will go this summer.

Ultimately it looks as if Del is a luxury that teams can't afford.
He has moved from Barca, Sevilla and Everton and it will be interesting to see if Milan want to keep him at the end of the season.
At Everton it isn't the current manager alone that has lost faith in him, the previous manager played him all the time up to Christmas and very little after that.

But should we qualify for Europe, Mirallas would be nice to have as a squad player. Either him or Deulofeu, but since Koeman's faith in Deulofeu is nowhere near the faith he has in Mirallas, it would make sense that Mirallas stays.
