Gerard Deulofeu

I like him, and, though he might not warrant a regular starting position, I think he'd be an excellent option off the bench. But, i'm in the same camp as Macca here, if a relatively young player isn't likely to be starting regularly, and has the ambition to do so, then we should let them go.

I agree that he deserves to play regularly but that doesn't mean we sell on the cheap. He's a 15m player all day long so either Milan or someone else pays, or he stays.

Successive managers have played Kone Cleverley Lennon DCL Valencia on the wings ahead of him. He's either not good enough (which I don't believe) or he needs to leave Everton for the good of his career. Sadly we're no longer the sort of club that will find room for a talent like his.

If I'm honest with you Dom, playing that list you furnish ahead of Del says more about those successive managers than it does about him :(

And it is a very sad day for this veteran devotee of the School of Science ethos which was once the lallmark of this club if you are right in asserting we have become the kind of club that "will find no room for a talent like his".

A very sad day indeed.

Best winger I've ever seen for Everton? Johnny Morrisey no question. A gold card member of the School of Science. You never saw him falling to the ground or standing hands on hips while the game went on around him. However talented you are (and Deulofeu is talented) you have to earn your right to be on that pitch. Morrisey knew this ,Deulofeu doesn't that's the big difference. Do you seriously think Catterick would have entertained Deulofeu and his histrionics?

Yeah it's a strange one, you just know that at some point you'll see him flaunting his stuff in the CL or terrorising England on the international stage and we'll wonder how we didn't get a tune out of him. Maybe it's just he's not suited to the prem, but I think you're right that we've had managers who prefer wingers that can compete for high balls than ones who can put pinpoint crosses in and get fans off their seats.

Indeed.

This is my biggest fear......Del will mature into a fantastic player and we will be be left lamenting the fact he was let go and Aaron Lennon retained

...but RK doesn't appear to be keen and he has to make choices. I suspect he'd also like to move Lennon on so I don't think it was a case of either or. Deulofeu was poor when RK gave him a chance which really disappointed me because I thought he might blossom under this manager after problems with Martinez.

I like Deulofeu but I have no problem with him being moved out if the manager doesn't want him. Looking at the bigger picture, the team has improved this season so the Manager is doing something right even if we disagree with some of his player choices.

fwiw - I think the buy back clause with Barcelona is at the back of Koeman and Walsh's mind with Deulofeu. If he'd played here and done well, he'd likely have been back off to Spain and there'd been absolutely nothing we could do about it. So I'd guess they decided that they didn't want to play him for a bit only to see him leave, so they'd rather play someone who's likely to be here next season.

Contractually, we're probably not in a strong position, and, if he doesn't go back to Barcelona, then the best we can do is negotiate a contract variation whereby he goes to Italy and we get a percentage of anything above the buy back fee.
