Using a pronoun that is relevant to the way they chose to present themselves isn't exactly heinous or not nice, though, is it.

If one chooses to wear a beard and want to be called she then it's nothing more than a trap, or undeserved attention seeking behaviour I'll have no truck with.

If one does not want to have a gender assigned by a pronoun - fine - just come up with a new word we can all agree to use ... but not "they." Preyentious twaddle.

I agree though - modern teaching standards were poor when I packed it in years back - possibly a contributing factor in this pronoun situation. You pay peanuts, get monkeys. Those that do it as a vocation, not the pay, like I did are very rare in an expensive world.

Anyhoos ... face to face I'll call anyone what they want me to call them, because I'm polite. With the caveat that I already struggle to remember names for more than 0.5s so remembering how they prefer to be known as is going to end badly.
