Gay footballers about to come out

Is it inevitable? There are gay athletes in a host of other sports and no one bats an eyelid. Society has moved on I would have thought. There's a much bigger problem with sexism in football than there is homophobia imo. Can you imagine a female official or coach?

Almost. It's not being allowed to move on by people making an issue out of their sexuality. As if it's the only thing that matters.

Sure there are still comments and that, but I'm not sure it really warrants all this fuss. Nigel Owens has been 'out' for 8 years or so and is likely to referee the WC final next weekend. You'd think that given the stick refs attract that if they can do so without fuss then it shouldn't really warrant this level of fuss over a player.

Do what you want in your private life and get on with it. 2015 innit.

all those blacks, they just can't behave themselves, just look at how many are in prison!
and don't get me started on Muslims...never seen one ever apologise for their terrorist attacks.
and what about those gays? always right in yer face about it...disgusting!

See? This is entirely the problem, say it as it is, and people twist it.

Are blacks black?

Are muslims muslim?

Are gays gay?

If they're not, then please advise on a descriptive term that's acceptable...a euphemism, if you like.

'Kinell, do people have to tread on eggshells to use any & every description? They are what they are.

Do you call a zebra 'a stripey horse' or a zebra?

Aye, I think it is inevitable. While not as bad as some of the Eastern European leagues, there's an undercurrent of homophobia in football that would surface if someone were to come out. I think it would only take a couple of years to effectively eradicate the problem, but nothing will happen as long as gay players feel the need to actively conceal it as opposed to maintaining their privacy for privacy's sake. Sexism is a massive problem in football, I don't remember saying it wasn't.

I was satirising the best-rated DailyMail comments about generalised perceptions over impossibly-large groups of people, but carry on

Why do they have to come out? It's just sex, ffs. Might as well start doing interviews every time the next big star pops his cherry.

I'm not saying they should hide it from family and friends, but why drag it into the media?

Because they HAVE to be 'in your face' abar it. To me & you (And most other people) it's no biggie. Tell that to the gays, and it's 'bigotry' because you're denying them the right to be in your face telling you that they're gay.

Starving them of the attention they crave, see?

...in order for it to be accepted as normal within a certain culture, someone must first normalise it.

In club culture and big-city culture, it's long been normalised. In football culture, it's not. Justin Fashanu came out and a few years later he committed suicide.

All a gay man wants is to feel free to go out with his partner just as heterosexual couples can go out. He doesn't feel free to do this as he's waiting on someone else to make the first move, as it were. Just takes time. Tom Daly, the swimmer, came out. As Bruce said we've had a ref come out. Only a matter of time until a prominent Prem footballer comes out. They'll be a big media circus, but this means subsequent 'coming-outs' won't be. Law of diminishing returns and all that.

I reckon most gay footballers are just waiting for the first poor sod to come out and take the brunt of the media hype, so that they won't have to.

Would it be okay to racially abuse someone as long as it's not personal?

I was waiting for this one. I personally wouldn't be bothered if someone abused me for being white. It all depends how offended you want to be or how offended you want to be on someone else's behalf.

Were your forefathers slaves? Are people of your skin colour regularly unfairly targeted by the police? Are you a racial minority in your country? No wonder you're not fussed about being abused for your white skin then.

While there is an element of some individuals playing the race card, and of focussing far too much on race (especially in liberal media...The Guardian is terribly unhelpful in this regard), there is a responsibility on everyone commenting on this issue to understand how US history of race, and their current attitudes to it, are relevant...even to those of us in Britain & Europe.
