Player Valuation: Free Transfer
Some of you will be aware that Gary is now Player-Manager at East Fife.
I am writing a piece on the career of Gary for the matchday programme to mark his forthcoming 500th career club appearance. Do you have any memories of his time at Goodison between 2000 and 2007 that you would be willing to share?

Stevie GBH nearly killing him with an assault at analfield, and surprisingly didnt get sent off.
Apart from that my abiding memory is that he looked like he was wearing diving boots when he tried to run.

Scored a cracking free kick away to Tottenham once. Apart from that, utter poo.
That was the one that came to my mind as well. Free kick on easter friday i think or easter monday. Was easter anyway.

I remember that game quite vividly. mainly because i didn't actually go! Was meant to, was going to use someones season ticket and was meant to pick it up before the game who couldn't make it (was 16 and getting child tickets through an Irish Fan group). Playing footie with my cousins a couple hours before the game over in rock ferry i turned and done my ankle in and couldn't walk for ages. Still not sure what damage i done as never got it checked out, all i know is i turned with the ball and my ankle didn't follow the rest of me lol

So yeah, that is the story as to why i remember gary naismith.

I mainly remember him for every commentator calling Steven Naismith "Gary" for about 6 months after he signed for us. His legacy if you will.

Solid professional, did a job for us but he played for us at the tail end of us being rubbish so I sort of lump him into the Walter Smith era of blandness and boredom.

The problem is he was ultimately replaced by Baines (via Pistone) who is one of the best attacking full backs of his generation so he suffers in comparison.

Pleased he has reached 500 games, he may not have had the ability of some players but he seems to have maximised his talent and looked after himself which are just the qualities you want when looking at players who are going to make good managers.

I was speaking to a painter and decorator who does all his work for him just the other day. He said that Gary is the nicest guy he had ever worked for, he does all his work at his UK house but also he had a property built in Portugal and Gary wanted to fly him and his lad out to decorate it for him, to which of course they were more than happy to do. Gary said that he'd put them in a 5 star hotel for their stay, but the painter said not to worry and that they'd sleep on the floor in the villa, after a bit of a discussion on that issue Gary (who really wanted them to take the hotel) accepted that the lads were happy to sleep at the unfurnished property. So when they got there he had bought them both a huge hamper of food and alcohol as a thanks.

He was also saying that shortly after Gary's playing career ended he was sat on a plane and Gerrard had been allocated a seat next to him and his wife. Still very unhappy with the tackle so it was an awkward flight.

Also said he still loves Everton, the reason the painter knew Gary was because he was friends with his agent, this same agent was also the representive of the likes of Kilbane and Steve Watson. The painter was a Kopite but he said due to his friendship with all the ex Everton players he had a soft spot for Everton and was amazed how much love all these players had for Everton despite all playing for other clubs.
