I've just got a sparkly new lappy but it's driving me mad.

Does anyone else run Vista and have probs with games older than about 2 years?

Utter [Poor language removed].

I'm currently trying to get GTA San Andreas to work properly.

I can - just about, after farting about with compatibility and admin crap - but it randomly freezes.

I'm thinking of just installing XP but a mate said that the new hardware is made to run on Vista and it can cause probs if you 'downgrade' to XP (sounds unlikely to me)

I hate Windows so very much.

I hate vista, i despise it immensely, but cant get a working version of XP on my laptop for some reason

In fact, i know its not games related, but currently i'm in safe mode as the laptop freezes when I get to the welcome screen.

I woulndt even attempt to play a game on here, its dreadful.

Wish i could afford an imac

Yeah run as admin works a lot. As does right clicking on the .exe going to properties and selecting XP mode under compatibility. But it still runs like a PII.

So crap.

Windows blatantly just makes their new OS's such horrible system hogs to force people into upgrading their hardware, probably all in it together. Conspiracy!

My laptop is a lovely dual core, 4gig or ram beast, yet runs games slower than my little 3 year old desktop that i made myself.

If i didnt play so much poker and GTA I'd get Linux.

I have solitaire on mine. Wanna swop?

I installed the windows 7 beta on a VM and it runs a lot nicer than vista. I will def be upgrading to that when it comes out, meant to run faster than vista on less hardware.

I abandoned Windows just as Vista was released ... switched to Kubuntu (Linux). It's much more user friendly than it was just a few years ago. They even have crossover programs that will allow you to run Windows apps (like your games). Might be worth looking into.

I was thinking of a partition Baz, but I wouldn't go near Vista ever again.

If anything it would be Linux for browsing and XP for gaming.

I don't have Vista to reinstall if it goes tits up so thats another concern, it came with the laptop.

Has anyone else heard that newer hardware is made specifically for Vista? I think this is probably gash seeing as it runs so badly anyway.

That's it I'm getting my XP disk. See you all in a few months :@

Check the bottom 2 links mate, Vista is 1 of them, XP is the other, i'm running my pc from a backup I downloaded from mininova because my XP went glitchy and I never got a disk with it. just burn it to a disk(y)

is there any updates/patches for your graphic card and the game itself ?

Graphics card is updated and there is only a patch for v1.0 of the game, I apparently have 2.0 (which means no hot coffee :( )

I think it may be one of those stupid Vista probs where you have to uninstall the game then reinstall the game, then move it from the Program Files folder then uninstall it then reinstall it then download a no cd patch and then run it in admin mode and do 5 hail marys etc etc.

Yuck.

i've been having similar probs to kj, i find that when windows updates the laptop goes tits up for a bit and some settings seem to alter, like when you just close the laptop you cant awaken it again, at the moment having trouble opening internet explorer, always have trouble using shortcuts from my desktop as well, the last few days though have had trouble starteing int. expl.

What you really want then would be Server 2003. Much more stable than XP. Really, it is what XP should have been. Of course, this was pre-SP3 and I haven't used a SP3 XP.
