It's Rom's grandson, so the spelling is different

It's not just about young players coming from the academy. We seem alright at buying young players and developing them, well Martinez does anyway.

4/5 years ago had anyone heard of John Stones, Romelu Lukaku and Brendan Galloway? Obviously not, but now we all wish they would never leave.

I'm more excited by our manager and his ways than anything else.

Therefore to predict our team in 5 years time is near impossible, but the talk of it is sound.

Good point. Lukaku was well known 4 or 5 years ago though - always been very highly rated.

I did find this from 2010, I won't embarrass it's poster by naming him as I imagine he'd be no different to everyone else.

Where are they all now? :)

I think it shows projecting our youth teams into a future side is probably more than a little floored.

Ya there's definitely a few clangers in there but when you consider it was 5 years ago and you have the following:

Barkley : Is a bit good
Rodwell : Has a premier league title (and we got decent money for him)
Garbutt : Probably the future of our left back spot
Coleman : The best right back we've had in a long time and one of the best in the league.
Mustafi : Won the world cup and apparently Munich and United badly want him

A good few of the rest have made it as professional footballers in the championship and below. Going on what the poster is saying of having one coming through a year or the top teams having 2 or 3... it's not bad really.

Just means we shouldn't expect to have our entire youth set-up make the progression into the first team... still a very exciting academy and seems to only be improving.

I think we're the same as all football fans, we all hype the hell out of the kids but at the same time... we have some form with producing youngsters and with bringing in young players and developing them to a high standard.

Can't believe we let Mustafi go without even playing him

Would he get in the side now? Good player but he's just one that slipped through the net, it happens. The fact we are regularly picking up players like Mustafi, Coleman, Garbutt, Stones, Galloway, Holgate shows our scouting team is right on the money with defenders. I mean it's pretty incredible really when you think about it, add Jags, Lescott, Baines, Distin, Heitinga, Oviedo, and hopefully Funes Mori to the list and our record with defenders recently is brilliant. Only Kroldrup, Alcaraz, Duffy, Jacobsen stand out as below quality but Kroldrup aside we barely paid anything for them.

it would be perhaps more interesting to find peoples projected future squads from similar threads 4-5 years ago and see how they compare to our current squad.
I bet none of them come anywhere near.

GK. Butland
RB.

Although this may seem daft, probably our graduates 5 years before that would of all ended up conference or league 2 etc (Schumachacher, Beck, Symes etc)

If you look at Mustafi, Duffy, Akpan,, Forshaw, Bidwell are all playing championship or above (one is a world cup winner.
We have kept Browning, Barkley & Garbutt also, so that is a great success from that team, to get so many professionals out of it.
