Everton 4-1 Fulham

Everton went fifth in the Premiership yesterday as they thrashed Fulham 4-1 at Goodison Park. Goals from experienced campaigners Carsley and Stubbs, as well as a goal each for youngsters Vaughan and Anichebe saw Everton grab the three points.

The match started as a fairly dull affair. Both teams passed the ball around well, without making any real inroads in an attacking sense. However Fulham stunned the home team on twenty two minutes. Ex-Everton player Simon Davies swung in a cross and Carlos Bocanegra powered home the header. David Moyes didn’t look pleased as the American international was unmarked by the Everton defence.

The goal seemed to spark Everton into life and their play improved immediately. Less than three minutes after going behind, they hit back in somewhat unlikely circumstances. Joleon Lescott powered down the left wing before sliding in a well timed cross. Lee Carsley added a sublime finish to claim his first goal of the season. The defensive midfielder rarely grabs the headlines, but the goal was a fitting reward for an outstanding contribution so far in Everton’s season.

Everton were in no mood to settle for a draw and continued to dominate. With just over half an hour gone, Mikel Arteta was fouled on the right wing by Fulham’s Michael Brown. The Spaniard Arteta whipped in the free kick and Alan Stubbs rose well and placed a header into the far corner. This was Stubbs’ first goal in his second spell at Everton, and it couldn’t have come at a better time.

After missing two good chances, 18 year old James Vaughan finally got a goal just before half time to all but seal the win for Everton. Excellent work by Andy Johnson won the ball for Everton and he passed back to Arteta on the right wing. His cross was met by Vaughan who smashed it into the roof of the net to send the blues in at half time leading by two goals.

Fulham came out an improved side for the second half. Chris Coleman had clearly been unhappy in the dressing room. However, the Everton defence stood firm and didn’t look like giving away a second goal.

With ten minutes to go, Moyes brought Victor Anichebe on for Vaughan. It proved an inspired move. Just two minutes after his introduction Anichebe fired in Everton’s fourth to seal an emphatic win. The young striker started the move in midfield before skilfully picking out Arteta. Arteta cut inside and passed to Anichebe who had continued his run. He made no mistake with the finish and fired it into the bottom left corner to finish the match in style. Unfortunately, Anichebe had to be taken off minutes later thanks to a jarred ankle.

The win was vital for Everton’s push for a European spot, a similar performance against Bolton on Monday would be gratefully received by Evertonians.
