Was this also the same game when our fan had it out with Nyarko mate ?
Haha that's an interesting look Unsy is giving him! And that's the most important aspect for me. We have a first class u23 and Academy set up , Jeffers has worked within it part time for 15 months so the key people involved have watched him and rated him good enough to be given a full time position, that's good enough for me. Nobody on this board can judge his coaching ability , the people who make the decisions can and if the likes of Unsy are happy with him then people need to get over themselves and what did or didn't happen yonks ago.

The other aspect of this decision is that from an Academy perspective it's needed, our "forwards" have been the weakest aspect of our Academy and u21/23 set up for years, we just haven't produced any decent strikers of late, a stark comparison to the decent defenders and midfielders we've had coming through. This is shown by the fact that we've had to buy in young forwards this year like Calvert-Lewin, Sambou and to a certain extent Tarashaj . We have two decent prospects in the under 18s in Lavery and Evans , plus the likes of Broadhead and Brewster as first year u23s so theres plenty of scope for him to get to work on. I've no idea if he's up for it and will be a capable coach but the position he is taking up is sorely needed so good luck to him.

My first reaction to this was one of -what are we giving that jug eared doorhandle a job for, the only thing he should be doing is going around clubs and telling them not to follow his example of throwing a career down the toilet. However there are a few points that make this understandable and indeed maybe a good move by the club.

As @blueloon has alluded to the area that we have been constantly weakest over the recent years in getting players through has been the forward positions. One of the best things about Jeffers was his movement and I would be happy to have him teaching our youngsters those sort of diagonal runs off the shoulder that he excelled at.

The other thing that makes me think this could work is the fact that he has been going to Finch Farm and doing coaching off his own bat for the past year and a half. I don't know whether the club have paid for him to do his badges but the fact that he has been going in and doing bits even when not on the payroll shows someone who wants to get on and probably appreciates that he undersold Everton with his playing career.

You could hardly say that most of Evertons other coaching staff had Thierry Henryesque careers so why should we hang Jeffers out to dry for the same thing? Ebbrell and Unsworth had decent careers, Phil Jevons a decent lower league career, the only one of our coaching staff whose playing career absolutely blows Jeffers out the water is Sheedy (other than our manager of course!!)

Hopefully Jeffers will be able to pass on some life lessons to the younger players as well as helping them become better players. There is a lot to be said for someone who had ability being able to put their hand up and say 'I didn't make the most of what I had and I want to make sure you don't fall into the same trap.'

no because he might be a poor coach. playing ability has zero to do with how good a coach someone is.

so you would rather have Jeffers than Henry coaching our youngsters is what you are saying? I would rather have Henry personally who is a good coach and excels at the art he is trying to teach

I've not said a great player makes a great coach or vice versa, just that I don't want Jeffers teaching our academy strikers as he's admitted he can only play a top 2 and these days its a 1 or a 3 upfront. That's my opinion, you are obviously delighted at the appointment, Im not sure why...but that's your opinion

not delighted, just think its very daft comparing 2 different professions.

If your asking me, It's a shame some end up welcoming no marks like Jeffers back with open arms whilst the likes of Southall and others from the 80's teams are left firmly out in the cold. Says a lot about how this clubs been run for years to me.

Nev is up there with Banks, Jennings Shilton etc, but he does have a negative attitude. Would you want him teaching/coaching youngsters? Im not sure I would tbh.

....the bottom line in this is whether Jeffers is a good coach or not. That is all that matters. I certainly don't know the answer to that. We need to employ the best coaches to develop our young talent.

I smell BK involvement in this how would Koeman know his ability to play or coach to think one day we had Colin Harvey as coach at all levels, and you have to use the name Jeffers in the same breath chalk and cheese me thinks?

I think Franny bought me a pint once ( in the Green Man at Wembley ? Though the memory is hazy ), so I'm in favour of this.

More seriously, the lad screwed up his career as a player and was a prat when he left here, but he may well make a decent coach so I'm struggling to show any outrage on the internet.

....I would like to think such an appointment couldn't be made without Walsh and Koeman pushing for it. If you are right, the club has not moved on as I would've hoped, which is very depressing.

Its hard to argue that was not great advice.

Indeed.

Sound advice, Pabbers.

But here's the thing.

I tend to view football from a very one dimensional perspective and that one dimension is all about L4.

So when I hear or read about someone advising our best players to leave our club, for any reason, I get annoyed.

It is even worse when it comes from a player we nurtured and gave a big break to.

And I don't forget :pint2:

Some of the best coaches in the world were mediocre players. And he is coaching in the academy, don't forget.

I would say most of the best coaches in the world were mediocre players.

Koeman is one of the few exceptions (not saying he is one of the world's best coaches....just that he was an outstanding footballer :))
