Ah 1969, I remember it well.
All down hill from then, yet I still managed to raise a family, buy and pay for a house, paying some years, 18% interest, while working 3 shifts in a factory.
How did you end up paying 18% for several years?

The base rate hit 17% for a very short time in 1979.

Not on the wind up, genuinely interested.

And what sum were you paying that interest on, and what % of your earnings did it take?

Recollections may vary (with age) as they say 17% / 18% tomato tomarto etc.
But as you can see from the graph it was High ! above 10% high more often than not on and off for years
