The last time Fylde played in the League Cup was when they made it to the last 16 in 2022. They were beaten by Leeds United that night at Elland Road. They face a similar task in playing away at the Riverside Stadium against Championship side Middlesbrough. Tyrone O'Neill made a return to the club he began his career with as the striker lined up against his former club. Mike Newell's side started well in the opening 20 minutes but Fylde were defending well and holding the line to keep Middlesbrough out. Virtue was making it tick for Middlesbrough in the first half, Brown coming close with a header but nodding it wide. Ed Brownhill rattled in a great free-kick that hit the underside of the bar and bounced over the line, Middlebrough taking the lead close to the interval. Set pieces were a problem for Fylde as Brown crossed in the free-kick and Saunders tapped it home. Johnson and Ferguson entered the fray but it didn't help matters when Mawson belted home the third with just over 30 minutes to go. Fifteen minutes left and Fylde were getting forward more, Ferguson taking the shot from outside the box but it trickled wide. Mel Pope was playing well winning back possession and looking to start attacking moves. It was all over when Brown slotted from Virtue's cross with ten minutes to go. Five minutes to go, Pope made an excellent tackle, got it out wide to Johnson who crossed into the box for Townsend but the keeper turned his shot round the post. Good effort. Johnson came down the right with three minutes to go, played the ball into the centre for Ferguson who hit a long range shot into the back of the net. Fylde get one back but too late to make a comeback.

AFC Fylde vs Notts County

If there's one player to get the crowd on their feet its Bryan Johnson who bombed down the wing beating two Notts County players and crossed for Sam Allaway to see his shot turned behind for a corner. Wisdom aimed the corner for the near post but the keeper stood tall and collected. Mick Wisdom has a reputation from free kicks and what a hit from the midfielder on 31 minutes right into the top corner! The keeper could only stand and watch! Mick Wisdom was having a great game, dictating the play, winning every tackle and linking up well with Mel Pope. It was great build up in the middle before Henderson made a run inside he played it through for Allaway who shrugged off the defender and made it two! It was a comprehensive victory for Fylde as they remained top of the table enjoying a great start in League Two.

AFC Fylde vs Grimsby Town

Three days later it was a visit from Grimsby Town who had Kian Robinson on the bench, Kian made 30 appearances for Fylde two seasons ago. Bryan Johnson picked up where he left off against Notts County bombing down the right wing at speed to cross into the box, Henderson won the header but it was easy for the keeper to claim. Fylde were hammering Grimsby, Johnson getting on the end of Ferguson's pass but the keeper got down to keep it out. Johnson took the free-kick for Fylde on the left side of the area, crossed it to the edge of the six yard box and Henderson flicked on the header which went in! Nice finish! Johnson came forward, picking the ball up from his own area, beating three Grimsby players down the left and crossing for Allaway whose header was tipped over by the keeper. Sam Allaway was having a quiet game so was replaced by Paul Townsend with 25 minutes to play. Not long left on the clock and Grimsby managed to grab one back, Alfie Payne scoring from a nothing chance catching the defence off guard with a low shot from outside the box. Grimsby came close to a second when Payne had another shot but this time it was cleared off the line by Morton, Grimsby have Fylde rocking and look likely to win the game. Mick Thompson headed over the bar from Payne's cross with seconds remaining. Fylde's 100% record comes to an end but they remain top of the table on goal difference.

DF: We should have won, we had the chances and we should have scored more than the one. I'm disappointed with that and it feels like a defeat. We have to not let this result get us down and we need to bounce back.
