Former Everton Centre Forward Duncan Ferguson steps into management.....

COASTERS OPEN UP WITH A DEFEAT

harrogate result.webp

The first game of the new season rolled around at Harrogate and what a thriller it was. An eight goal spectacle began when new signing, right back Freddy Burton scored on his debut, O'Neill won possession back in the opposition half and found Ginnelly in the centre of the park, Burton bombed down the right hand side and pointed to where he wanted the ball before finishing it on a tight angle into the bottom corner. O'Neill almost gave Fylde a second 5 minutes later when he headed just over the bar from the corner, it would have eased the pressure on the away side. The equaliser came shortly after when Holt found himself in acres of space outside the 18 yard box and hit one sweetly into the top corner, Griffiths reacting late to the shot to get across to it. Fylde kept their heads and played attacking football until the whistle ended the first half, looking the better side so far in this game. Striker Tyrone O'Neill got his season off to a start when he rounded the keeper from Croasdale's long ball forward, 2-1 to the coasters but it was short lived when Harrogate managed to pull one back again, Feeney's clearance failed to get to the nearest Fylde midfielder and Harrogate came forward with Koroma scoring from inside the box into the roof of the net, poor closing down costing Fylde their lead. An end to end game gave viewers the sense this was far from over and it was Fylde who took the lead again with Ginnelly getting lucky with his shot that the keeper could not hold and push into his own net, a fine strike resulting in poor goalkeeping, Fylde now back in control. It was all to change the moment Feeney went in late on Pressley who beat him for pace down the wing, Feeney took the man and picked up his second yellow card putting The Coasters at a disadvantage. Ryan Croasdale made way for Centre half Giuseppe Bellusci. Harrogate turned up the heat and it was Fylde who invited the home side into their half, a lofting ball through for Pressley caught out the midfield and defence and he hit it on the half volley to pull it back for Harrogate. 3-3 with ten minutes to go and Harrogate looking the likeliest out of the two to take the game. This time it was poor defending at the corner gave Pressley a free header into the back of the net, Harrogate now in the lead and Fylde waving the white flag. Ferguson was furious with his defence at this point but urged his team forward to press for the equaliser. Bellusci had a shot from point blank range saved by the keeper although it was straight at him. Bellusci didn't have the best of debuts when he gave away a penalty in the 94th minute by pushing Pressley in the box when the cross came in. No arguments from the Fylde players and at this point complete dejection span across their faces, 5-3 from the spot and the Coasters could not wait to get down the tunnel. Not the start the title contenders wanted.

DF: We have to improve massively at the back, I can't argue with any decisons, we brought it on ourselves. Feeney should be more professional and he lost his head late on, we were controlling the game at that point but we threw it away in those last ten minutes. Big improvements needed.

The first home game of the season and Fylde started very strongly, Euan Henderson scoring inside 120 seconds from the spot, Wright-Phillips was brought down inside the box and Henderson tucked away the spot kick. Still pushing forward and the second came shortly after, Fylde winning every second ball and looking terrifying when going forward, McCann had a shot blocked by the defence but hit the rebound on his right foot low and hard into the bottom corner. Fylde got the third after catching Orient on the break, Ginnelly squaring the ball for Henderson in the area who tapped it past the keeper, 3-0 after 16 minutes. An excellent start at Mill Farm! Fylde went 4-0 up, Bellusci delivering a floating cross from 30 yards out into the box for the rising head of Wright-Phillips who put it over the gaping hands of the Orient keeper. Fylde fans now in dreamland at this wonderful start but McClenaghan caught the Fylde back line napping after turning Ginnelly and hit a nice strike into the bottom corner, Griffiths rooted to the spot and losing his first possible clean sheet. Fylde still looked dangerous every time they moved the ball forward with fast one touch passing, the fifth goal coming from a corner when Ginnelly flicked on McCann's delivery to O'Neill who got up above his man to guide home putting this game beyond doubt. 5-1 at half time. Orient grabbed a second early in the second half when Burton was caught ball watching, Hamilton scoring at the far post to give Orient slight hope. Fylde look great going forward but shambolic at the back, Ferguson urging his players to put their foot through the ball instead of trying to play it out from the back, it was detrimental and Orient got a third with Hamilton again opening up the defence to slot past Griffiths. A poor showing in the second half could've been a lot worse but the scoreline remained at 5-3 giving Fylde their first win and a few lessons to look back on after conceding 8 goals already in two games.

A steady away performance earned Fylde a point as Henderson was instrumental down the left flank. Mick Wisdom got his debut and the fans were excited to see what the midfielder had to offer. After picking up an arm injury he was taken off for Ryan East with 40 minutes to play. The opener came for Hartlepool in the pouring rain when Collins dug deep in a scramble in the box to stab the ball over the line but Fylde did not give up and got the equaliser through Henderson who took the ball on his right foot, past the defender and hit it powerfully towards goal, a deserved goal for the winger after a solid performance. Neither side really doing enough to take all three points and a welcome point for Fylde who didn't bring that attacking flair over to the North east with them this Friday evening.

THE LANCASHIRE COAST DERBY

BLACKPOOL RESULT.webp

A fiery contest at Mill Farm but Fylde the stronger side once again in this fierce rivalry, the players fully focused on the task at hand and a solid display saw the first goal come in the second half when Wright-Phillips danced down the wing and cut the ball back for McGavin whose shot trickled through for O'Neill to get on the end of and finish neatly. The Fylde fans in raptures of joy after breaking the deadlock. Blackpool's free kick was saved by Griffiths who quickly launched the ball forward for the run of O'Neill but the Blackpool defence were on hand to head clear, Ginnelly powering through the midfield to win the second ball and quickly found Wright-Phillips out wide with a pass for him to run on to, Wright-Phillips then crossing low for the side footing swipe of O'Neill who buried it for his second of the game. Blackpool came forward to no real pressure and Adams seemed to slip beneath the back line timing his run to slot the cross from Harmon with no Fylde defenders picking up the midfielder. Poor defending costing Fylde another clean sheet. Frank Mutch found himself goal side in the 89th minute but Griffiths parried his shot away with a wonderful save, Gavin Nolan drifted in the following corner and Griffiths was there to beat away everyone and clutch his hands to the ball. A win for Fylde in the derby but improvement still needed defensively if this side are to achieve promotion this season. A win on the board and a good attacking performance. Blackpool unlucky not to snatch a draw.
