Former Everton Centre Forward Duncan Ferguson steps into management.....

BOLTON OFF TO A FLIER

stoke result.png

The visit of Stoke City on the Championship opening day would be a tough fixture for anyone and it was Roco who gave The Potters the lead on 18 minutes when James Ward-Prowse swung in the corner which was fumbled by Ben Amos, Roco was nearest to react and stabbed the ball over the line. Joao Pedro won Bolton a penalty when he was brought down on 31 minutes and midfielder Daniel Batty smashed it into the top left corner leaving Bursik with no chance. The game was tight at 1-1 with neither side pushing hard for a winner until the 75th minute. Dwight McNeil had the bal on the left flank and played it inside to Oztumer who took a quick look up and played a long ball forward to Joao Pedro to latch onto a left footed volley. The Brazilian striker scoring on his Bolton debut in style. Right back Nathan Byrne hobbled off in the 80th minute with a suspected ankle injury and it was revealed he will be sidelined for around 2 months. Stoke midfielder Idrissa Gueye was kept quiet today with Daniel Batty dominating midfield for Bolton. The Trotters held firm in the dying embers of the game and picked up a well deserved 3 points to make the perfect start to the campaign.

The following week Bolton travelled to Hillsborough to play Sheffield Wednesday. Bolton looked in control of the game from the off with Wednesday out of sorts. Robertson scored a great left footed shot from 25 yards out in the first half giving keeper Padt no chance. Sean Robertson broke forward regularly down the right hand side causing the defence many problems. The winger recapturing the fine form he finished on last season. Lewis Gibson, on loan from Everton put in a great performance at left back with Ferguson giving the youngster instructions to get forward whenever possible, the left back was completely solid and put in an outstanding performance. Ben Amos made a good few stops from the Wednesday attack late in the second half tipping one over from long range deep into stoppage time. A great away performance for The Trotters.

Walsall result.png

A small crowd at The University of Bolton Stadium saw a shock result when League One side Walsall scored what seemed like a very easy goal on 4 minutes. Edser chipping the ball into the top corner with Ben Amos thinking it was going over the bar. A dismal start for Bolton. Mampala had a chance to equalise on 49 minutes when he was clear of the Walsall defence but hit the ball straight at the keeper. Bolton fans held their head in their hands given how easy this was for a striker. Sean Robertson was needed and came on in the 57th minute replacing the injured Politi. Lewis Gibson crossed inlow which found Robertson in the area who cooly slotted the ball home to put Bolton back in the game. Osede left his foot in on Holloway when trying to win the ball and the referee had no choice but to give it. Campbell scoring but Amos almost getting his hand to keep it out. Bolton had to throw everything at it to keep their cup hopes alive but it was clearly an off day for The Trotters who crashed out of the League Cup in abysmal fashion. Back to league action for Wanderers.

The McNeil and Robertson show was back as they tore apart The Tractor Boys on a wet day in Bolton. Huws came close for Ipswich on 12 minutes with a powerful shot whisting over the bar. Half the ground thinking it was goal bound. Dwight McNeil won Bolton a free kick on 29 minutes with some trickery catching out right back Logan. Daniel Batty crossed low to the near post and the diving head of McNeil who beat his marker put it into the back of the net. A great goal. Jason Lowe found McNeil in space inside the box who had to take the ball out of the area, created space for himself and hit a wonderful cross to the far post to find Sean Robertson waiing to tap it into the net. 2-0 up inside the first half putting Bolton into dream land with a fantastic start to the season. Huws had a curling shot narrowly going over the bar for Ipswich once again but this time Amos seeing it over. Batty got his second assist and Robertson got his second goal with another fine cross to the near post this time Robertson knocking it over the line. A 3-0 scoreline for Bolton and seemingly out of sight now. A good performance from the team secured 3 wins out of 3 putting gaffer Duncan Ferguson in dream land.

DF: It's not the start I expected. I expected these 3 games to be quite tough but we have been set up very well defensively and young Gibson has slotted in at left back naturally and has a good relationship with his team-mates. We've been great in all phases of play, especially defensively. Pedro and Mampala have took the heat off Robertson and McNeill who have free roam in the attacking third to create and score goals. I would like to see more goals from our centre forwards as they were brought in to score but so far we are defying the critics and we are unbeaten in three. Let's not get ahead of ourslves here but it's a great block to build on. The games come thick and fast in this league and our squad is quite thin, a lot of luck is required for Bolton to be successful and a fully fit squad is vital to us.

Struggling Reading picked up their first win of the season through a 24th minute goal when Callum Connolly linked up with Duncan Watmore to play some quick one touch passing before Watmore crossed to the far post to Tavernier to knock it past Amos. Bolton struggled to keep their impressive performances going on an off day down south. It was almost 2-0 in the 70th minute when Amos saved from Tavernier at close range to deny him a second. Bolton struggled to clear their lines until Osede stepped in and got the ball out of danger. Final result - 1-0.

Preston result.webp

Another away day misery for Wanderers at Deepdale in what some locals call a derby game. Faustino Anjorin - a player admired by Duncan Ferguson gave the Scot a a nightmare powering a shot into the back of the net on 18 minutes. The player was linked with Bolton in the summer but the move never materialised. Daniel Batty won the ball back deep inside his own half and played it towards Amos, Amos played it short out to Osede who gave it to Oztumer who came deep to receive it. Oztumer played a nice pass out wide to McNeil who then jinxed past 2 players finding Oztumer in acres of space to hit a hopeful shot that sailed past the keeper into the right hand corner. 1-1 and Bolton in with a shout. Preston came out the blocks in the second half but Bolton managed to keep the home side at bay for 20 minutes before Anjorin turned provider and put it on a plate for Maguire to head the ball in. Preston in full control of the game from then on with the only shining light to be Erhun Oztumer, the Turkish midfielder looking like the only player to put in the work rate. Highly rated Sean Robertson misplaced passes and many say its to do with the recent plaudits from the local media.

DF: We have to improve on the road, it's as simple as that. We just wasn't at the races today and some players stood out like sore thumbs. We have to transition quicker from defence to attack when we are playing away but all credit to Preston, they had us sussed from the second half and were firmly in control.

A televised game which would have put most to sleep only got exciting in the 64th minute when a low, hard free kick hit by Bellusci stung the fingers of Soria in the West Brom goal with the ball going into the net. A moment to wake up the quiet crowd and put Bolton in the driving seat. Bolton failed to close down Steven Graham 7 minutes later when the midfielder hit a half volley from outside the box to sail past Amos into the top corner. Kim Jin-Ya was onto a through ball after deceiving Cavare who then pulled down Jin-Ya to give away a penalty in the last five minutes. Alex Pritchard stepped up but Ben Amos guessed right and kept the ball out. The Bolton fans breaking into song for their highly rated goalkeeper. A tough point earned against top opposition but Ferguson's men picked up the point to keep them just outside the play-off places.

Joey Barton, a controversial character throughout his career done himself no favours when storming out of the post match conference. Something must have rattled Barton for him to leave after what seemed such a simple question.
