Formation

So I really don't know what to call it, seemed almost like a 5-2-3, where coleman and baines were wingbacks ahead of the our 3 cbs, osman and gibson sitting in the middle, and mirallas jelavic and anichebe mixing it up in attack.

Seemed sturdy enough, I like heitinga on the field when he has 2 other centre backs to bail him out for his inevitable 1 or 2 mistakes, and we certainly didn't struggle to create chances.

Biggest drawback is coleman didn't seem to have the space he usually does to run, and baines seemed a bit impeded by it as well. I think they'll both adjust though.

For me other than Wigan that was one of the most misjointed performances at Goodison this season. I know we where missing Pienaar and Felli but a lot of the time we had to pass backwards. A better team would have taken advantage of us there. However it worked for this game.

change of formation always takes time and practice . its always good to have different tactical options . not saying it worked or it didn't but least Moyes tried something new and positive and actually got barkley on the field

Did it's job, tried to counter their negative football with bodies in the right area, and largely worked, plus we got the 3 points.

Doubt we'll see it again this season as we won't be playing Stoke again.

I didn't see an awful lot different in Coleman's game, tbh. He pretty much plays off Gibson on his inside whether we go four or three at the back. I dont see much of a partnership with whoever steps over to play RM in our usual 4-4-1-1. Bascally Coleman is tasked with running that whole right flank.

It was like playing with 10 men. The midfield was basically two men - and they were overrun. Osman and Gibson constantly had nothing on to pass to and as a result had to go backwards all the time - from where it was hoofed. The hoofing was never gong to work against Stoke - especially as Jelavic is completely off form and nothing sticks to him. When Coleman or Baines got on the ball they were completely isolated and so everything broke down time and time again.

Essentially the system forced us to play hoofball to a lone unsupported striker. Hated it.

I've been asking for this formation for years, and I thought it was ok. Would have worked better had Baines actually got forward like he usually does, and had Gibson been on form...

Coleman showed why the formation worked, it gave him more freedom to get forward

Nailed it mate.

I thought we set up like that so that they couldn't play the long ball so well, not for our purposes, which is extremely negative. They quickly worked out there was space in the middle of the park. Still nice to try something else, don't often get Moyes experimenting.

thing is Moyes takes a lot of flack for being negative and not making decisions . he tried something new still got the 3 points job done . whether its the answer who knows but we now know its an option . better to be criticised for the decisions you make than the decisions you don't

Didn't like it. CMs were completely run over (granted that isn't a new problem) and oddly enough despite having wingers Coleman and Baines were often surrounded by 3 players without any passes on. Might have been a different story with Pienaar on the wings instead of Jelavic and Felli down the middle.

Although props to Moyes, the formation did its job. We overloaded the Stoke defense without the pitch turning into a wrestling ring.

Wasn't too taken with it myself, but fair play to Moyes for trying something different to win today. I can't see us using it against Spurs because Bale will have a field day with the space behind the full back.

With a fully fit squad and no bans, would it be something like this...?

--------------------------------------------------Howard
--------------------------------Heitinga----------Jags----------Distin
----------------Coleman----------------------------------------------------Baines
-------------------------------------Fellaini--------------Gibson
------------------------------------------------Mirallas
---------------------------------Anichebe----------------------Jelavic
