Final League Position

You get heavily compensated financially for any dip in league form that may come about through playing in the Champions League, the money allows you to strengthen and the prestige makes you a more attractive club. If you spend well then your investment should limit the degree to which the European competition impinges on your league form. Qualifying for the Champions League is not pointless.

The same does not apply to the Europa League. There's no big financial rewards, no opportunity to strengthen, but plenty more games to play, and this is when it starts to become pointless!

My fear is that a Europa League campaign will make qualifying for the Champions League unlikely, and I don’t think we are too far away at the moment, but adding another 6 or 7 games to such a small, vulnerable squad is going to be too much.

So competing in a competition we are more likely to win is pointless, but qualifying for one we have no chance of winning just to get some extra money isn't ?

Qualifying for the Champions League would not give you enough money to regularly finish in the top 4, that's the whole point.

Why do you think we have a chance to win the europa league Brennan? I can't see us getting anywhee near.
Personally I'd rather get into the group stages and maybe even on one more in the CL, use the money to improve the squad, then have a real go at the Europa league.

Fulham reached the final. FULHAM.

And you can't use the CL money to improve the squad properly unless you regularly qualify, because you need that extra income to pay those new players' wages. That's why Spurs are in a tricky situation, and their revenue is already plenty higher than ours.

In terms of finances, we'll probably be among the very top teams in the comp. There's not many europa league teams that spend 64 million on wages. So you'd expect, if the market works, for us to be among the best teams in it. Because players go where the money is. If they're worth 60 grand a week they'll find a club that can pay it.

And in terms of finalists in recent years, the likes of boro, fulham, rangers, celtic, braga, espanyol etc aren't as good as this team.

Certainly in the league we've beaten CL teams on aggreate. And the year fiorentina knocked us out, we were as good as any team left in it.

The amount of games is a worry and you know I think we're never going to win a cup under Moyes, but in theory it's a winnable competiton, if you ignore the way we tend to panic and underperform in europe.

Proper not arsed about the EL. The group games are just a bind & it only becomes vaguely interesting at the knockout phase.

Having to play Thursday / Sunday with a small squad, just to compete in that comp in it's current guise does nothing for me.

Oh and btw, people seem to overestimate the amount of money you get from the Champions League group stages.

This season it was £6m guaranteed revenue for reaching the group stage, £800k for a win and £400k for a draw.

We'll actually get about four times as much from the new TV deal, which all clubs will be given. Champions League money is not going to revolutionise our finances. The amount you gain from the CL has a lot more to do with the popularity of the club already, and progressing out of the groups.

Qualifying for the Europa League is far more pointless than qualifying for the Champions League, for all the reasons that I have already mentioned.

You get to strengthen your team through qualifying for the Champions League, and there is a lot of prestige and it makes you a more attractive club. None of this applies to the Europa League. You get next to no extra money, and a whole load of non-prestigious games to contend with.

You mention Spurs. Well, I think they are a great example of how pointless the Europa League is. They have absolutely fack all to show for their campaign in the Europa League this season, their star player was injured (could easily have been a lot worse), and I dare say that their Europa League campaign has cost them points this season, and that they are likely to miss out on the Champions League (by a margin as small as one single point, or even goal difference) as a consequence.

The benefits of qualifying for the Champions League far outweigh the 'benefits' (if you can call them that) of qualifying for the second rate Europa League.

If you don't understand the joy of reaching a european quarter final and beating lyon and inter along the way, I don't get why you watch football, tbh.

That's just the participation money, you also get a share of the TV cash, based on the value of your domestic market.

United made £46m the other year when they made the final.

I want to be back in Europe so that I can go to obscure places with thousands of other blues and sing songs all day in funny bars with foreign football fans. Don't care if it's on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday night.

Don't get people being snobby about which competition we go into. It's not like we've ever even been in the Champions League.

We reached the quarter finals of it, lad.

£46m wouldn't even get us regularly top 4 because we haven't got the revenue back up to pay wages. People don't seem to understand that.

The gap in finances between us and the big boys is so so huge.

It'll take far more than a single trip to the group stage to close that.

Our aim should be to win cups, full stop.
