FIFA and future World Cup allocations

Aren't there only 10 teams in south America?

6 seems perfectly reasonable

It's not perfect by any means, but FIFA is clearly trying to help out nations that have deep pockets and crap football squads from the AFC and CONMEBOL takes the biggest hit. Although I'd expect some/many to be frustrated that UEFA doesn't get more than 16. And there are still a few (2?) play in spots.

Current AFC rankings (FIFA rank) 8 get in:
1 (33) Iran
2 (40) Korea
3 (51) Japan
4 (55) Oz
5 (57) Saudi Arabia
6 (63) Uzbekistan
7 (68) UAE
8 (84) Qatar

9 (86) China
10 (95) Syria
...

Current CONMEBOL rankings (FIFA rank) 6 get in:
1 (1) Argentina
2 (2) Brazil
3 (4) Chile
4 (7) Colombia
5 (9) Uruguay
6 (18) Peru

7 (22) Ecuador
8 (43) Paraguay
9 (59) Venezuela
10 (97) Bolivia

*Just be clear, Ecuador ranks higher than all AFC teams, and Paraguay higher than all but 2; these things can, and will change, over time, but the pool sizes clearly aren't based on merit.

60% of South America are now guaranteed to qualify

Surely that's enough?

It'll be closer to 20% for Asia

If you can't finish in the top 6 of a 10 team group then you frankly don't deserve to qualify

Dunno. What do you want in the World Cup? The best teams? I'm not particularly excited to watch UAE.

I want all of the confederations to get as reasonable and as fair representation as possible

How are these nations supposed to get better otherwise?

It's the WORLD Cup

Again, if a team can't finish in the top 6 of a 10 team group then I don't think they deserve to be in the world cup

How many for south America would you consider to be fair?

Because any more than 6 would essentially turn qualification into a farce

I think the fact more than half of the confederation can qualify is pretty generous myself

The Argies don't look like they'll be in Russia*, and maybe not Italy either. If you lose, you lose, but I'm not placated by the Uzbeks' chance to qualify. I want to see the best teams in the world, not a uniform distribution of football playing nations from across the world.

*Oh, looks like they can still qualify by beating NZ, so maybe not all is lost yet.

Not that FIFA rankings are the end-all (and they're relatively new), but for reference France was ranked #18 prior to winning in 1998. So yes, I'm arsed about kicking out a(nother) potential #20s seed in favor of a(nother) crap team from a crap federation.
