People.co.uk - Jack of all trades fits Fergie bill

Manchester United are targeting Everton and England Under-21 star Jack Rodwell.

United scouts have kept a close eye on Rodwell, and boss Sir Alex Ferguson has received glowing reports about the versatile 18-yearold, who is on duty with Stuart Pearce's squad at the European U21 Championship in Sweden.

With FIFA keen to pursue the '6+5 rule' - at the start of each league match, clubs must field at least six players eligible to represent the national team of the country in which the league is based - Fergie wants to maintain a core of English players at Old Trafford.

Sensing Rodwell's huge potential, Everton moved quickly to upgrade his contract and the teenager recently signed a five-year deal.

That will not deter Ferguson - just as it didn't put him off clinching a £27million deal to capture Wayne Rooney from Goodison five years ago.

And with cash-strapped Everton still vulnerable to attractive offers for their stars, the Southport-born youngster has emerged as a serious United target.

But Goodison boss David Moyes is determined to keep Rodwell, whose ability to play an attacking or defensive midfield role, in addition to operating as an emergency centre-back, puts his value to Everton at £9m.

Rodwell made his debut for Everton's reserve team at the age of 15 and on his senior debut became the youngest player to represent the club in Europe when he came on as a substitute against AZ Alkmaar at 16 years and 284 days.

He has continued to make rapid progress and in March was called up to the England U21 squad.

Wouldn't like to lose him personally. Some would agree Rodwell is better (and has more potential) than what Rooney was at the same age.

Value? £81m to you Fergie.

Would these be the same people who thought Vaughan was better than Rooney? And Anichebe was better than Rooney? And John Paul Kissock was the next big thing? And Branch was better than Fowler, Cadamarteri was better than Owen, and basically any current Everton youngster was better than any other youngster, past or present?

Honestly, at this age Rooney was leading the line for England, while Rodwell isn't even getting in the England U21 team ahead of Lee Cattermole.

Personally I wouldnt sell him as I think he has huge potential . If push comes to shove and United come in hard id budge at 28 million .

If he's sold it'll run a coach and horses through the propaganda the club have been trotting out for the best part of three years. I'd say just about anyone will go before Rodwell does.

Rodwell is bound to attract serious interest from the Sky Four. Maybe SAF is interested in getting him to Old Trafford. Had to laugh with the valuation of £9m that Everton supposedly put on his head. If he goes, it will be for a lot more than that. Don't think he'll leave for quite a few years yet.

Chelsea, and John Terry in particular, have been sniffing around JR for two years or more so don't be surprised if they get involved at some stage.I'm a realist, and its my belief that unless we increase our profile in the next 3 - 5 seasons then we will find ourselves in the unfortunate position of having to cash in on a fantastic prospect.

There is absolutely no way we will be selling Rodwell, well not for £9 million anyway.

Otherwise id take £20 million + Nani, Fletcher and Wellbeck
