Dixie Dean: The Inside Story of a Football Icon by John Keith is a superb read. The likes of Rooney and Jeffers should read this to realise what playing for Everton means.

TBF, if Dean played today for Everton he'd have had one high scoring season and then been sold.

Just finished reading Baz Rathbone's book The Smell of Football after a couple of recommendations on this thread. It really is a great read - well written, brutally honest and hilarious in parts. The story of how/when he meets Moyes for the first time at Preston is brilliant and reminds you how lucky we are to have him at the helm.

Yeah, love that bit. Amazing what a miserable time he had at his boyhood club, too.

I love the bit when he meets Ferguson who greets him with "My name's Big Duncan and I've finished a few physios' careers in my time" and Rathbone replies with "I'm Mick and I've finished a few players'!"

Anyone read that book 'Scally' about an Everton football hooligan?

Reminds me of the part I read in Cass Pennant's autiobiography where he said they got chased from Goodison and before they knew it they were in the heart of Toxteth.

Didn't know West Ham's firm was a gang of world class marathon runners.

School of science by James Corbett is a great read, he also has a new book coming out later this year.

Was not a fan of that. A lot of it is rehashed from other books. I didn't come across anything new in that book. I look forward to reading his new one though the price looks a bit steep.

Just reading 'Tales from the Gwladys Street' and I am totally engrossed. Its stories from players and fans and its quite funny. Always thought Martin Dobson was a bit of a cold fish with regards to Everton but this proves otherwise. He tells the story of Duncan Mackenzies return to Goodison as a Chelsea player...well Dunc scored to make it 1-0 and in Dobbos words.....

" I have never experienced it before and never have since. Duncan scored for Chelsea and the 38,000 plus supporters at Goodison rose to acclaim the goal from the former crowd favourite. I remember running back to the halfway line for the kick off and looking at Andy king. Our expressions were a picture. 'What's all that about, dobbo?' said Kingy. 'we're 1-0 down and the fans have gone beserk!'

I remember that game well and it was an amazing scene.

Even though I am still only about a quarter through the book I do recommend it. I have read Snods book and it is funny and the Scally book I found fascinating and interesting. I don't think he would exaggerate himself getting his head kicked in several times. Read the West Ham book and was bored with it after hearing that they never lost a battle and how about 6 of them would leg 1000's. Truly a sh it book.

Absolutely priceless, I knew he was a bit of a dipso but I didn't realise the extent of how bad his situation was, and yet he still went out and played like that every week, highly recommended read

read this book on holiday not what you expect,but for a history about the way footballers were treated in the fifties absolutely brilliant!

My Grandparents got me an essential history of Everton book one Christmas that they had signed by Brian Labone. I hold that quite dear.
