He wasnt an alternative as he was never going to come back, but Bill took a lot of flak because fans thought he wanted Moyes, he proberbly did, but since he had no say on it at the time it was just a made rumor spread by fans for a moan, then we got Rafael via Moshiri and some actually try to blame Bill for that
