Greg Clarke resigned over poor use of words but didn't mind when 30.000 liverpool fans racially abused evra at anfield , laughable.

This is the crux for me, nothing is going to change with this guy resigning. Most people don't give a damn about football outside of what happens on the pitch. That's why you get morons like them booing him when he's the victim.

The way to tackle this is much harsher sanctions on the field. Suarez should have been banned for years/chucked out of the sport altogether and made to undertake classes and sessions to help him understand diversity. I doubt suarez has changed as a person and lfc fans' perception has not been changed as a result either hence why they boo Holgate after a similar incident. 8 month ban is pathetic and it didn't really do any good for the game imo.

Gobsmacked that in 2020 this still needs explanation as to why it's offensive.

The term was used to segregate and subjugate.

Go and educate yourself

The entire irony in your reply just speaks volumes.

Did I say offensive? I saId uneducate you’re in a public position, and when there’s such a focus on diversity in the Football Pyramid, in particular The FA, you don’t make a comment like that.

It is now 2020, and your use of past tense means you may well have been correct st some point but now it’s deemed an inappropriate comment.

Things might change depending on who takes his place. A black former player would be perfect.

You can understand why some might be confused at what is offensive, especially if they weren't around during those times.

As I said in this post: https://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/threads/fa.111492/page-3#post-8265898
Example
Saying "Woman of colour" is considered political and empowering
Saying "Coloured woman" is considered offensive

So I don't think its fair to assume everyone who says 'coloured' means to be offensive. They should, of course, simply say 'black' but even that could cause offence if you incorrectly assume someone's race.

The buses that ran that blacks couldn't travel on didnt say no people of colour on them
The schools black kids weren't allowed to go to didnt say no people of colour allowed
The shops they weren't allowed to shop in, the parks they weren't allowed in.
Whites.......Coloureds

Like I said, it was used to segregate and subjugate.
Whether we like it or not, it's offensive. To continue to use it and argue its case is ignorant.

Yeah I get that and I'm not arguing its case, I'm arguing that its not fair to assume those who use it when 'correct' terms are worded so similarly know of the history and use it regardless. Maybe calling those people ignorant is fair, imo to say someone is 'ignorant' implies intent to ignore the facts (not a lack of knowledge), which I don't think is true in all cases.

The term is frowned upon in the US too. What he said was he used "people of colour" which is just about ok. However he didnt say people of colour, he said "coloured". The two things are radically different.

I have worked for several American companies (incorporated in the US and trading in the US and UK) and the word "Color" still seems to be used in Corporate Ameri

I have worked for several American companies (incorporated in the US and trading in the US and UK) and the word "Color" still seems to be used in Corporate America e.g. People of Color, Women of Color etc.

I also personally know people who are happy to attend these groups and identify with their principal meaning.

Consequently if the US did have an issue with these and similar words/phases there would be lawsuits too numerous to mention coming from the most litigious society in the World (Probably!)

It's complicated!

There can be many many reasons why some people use words or phrases that other people find offensive.
And
The people being judged are often equally offended by the those doing the judging!

I live in America and it's not accepted in any corporation to refer to any subset of minorities as colored. It is completely unacceptable. People saying this are clueless. Black people have fought against the colored label for like 30 years now. Just stop with this stuff.

Do some people still use the term? I'm sure they do but it is not something people are ever advised to do here. It's such a lying bs excuse by that guy.

And I don't really care whether he gets fired or not, I think people are too sensitive. But seeing all these posts about well this is what they do in America from morons

While I accept that the term "coloured" is now considered offensive, it should be said that one of the longest-established civil rights bodies in the USA is the NAACP, which is short for "National Asociation for the Advancement of Colored People", so maybe not everyone who uses the term is of necessity a racist.

I agree but the NAACP was created when the term was acceptable. I'm not trying to label the guy a racist. I just want to dispel the notion that Americans are like taught to use the term. I'm 30. It was never taught to me to use, I've never heard people who I respect use it in a formal setting. And I've seen things change, it's gone from african americans to black Americans as the correct verbage I think. But even I can't keep up but colored people was like the correct terminology in maybe the reagan era if I'm being kind

As a middle class white man I definitely need some education about how the term 'people of colour' can be deemed racist but the term 'black people' isn't.

Black people are every shade of brown from slightly brown through to very dark brown but they're not actually black. So how did the term 'black' ever become socially acceptable? For me, 'people of colour' seems far more suitable as not all black people are the same colour.
Am I looking at it too simplistically? I'm guessing it's something that only a black person could really explain to me.
