FA Cup or 5th?

So nearly everyone in here would rather an FA Cup win than finishing 5th.

The real question I guess is why is there hundreds of pages on this forum devoted to blasting Martinez for our league position, when all we really want is a cup win?

Makes you think doesn't it?

No, not really.

A hypothetical question doesn't mean anything in reality where we should be higher in the league and challenging for cups at the same time. So far we've done no better in that regard with Martinez than we ever did under Moyes.

I'd rather aim for the top four and finish 5th, than not aim for the top four and win the FA Cup. Because a winning team should be aiming to finish as high up in the league as possible, with the cups considered a bonus.

If you actually judge success based on domestic cup competitions, your mindset is very much small time.

Nonsense. There is nothing 'small time' about having logical goals and being satisfied with them being achieved. That is success.

Of course it means nothing. It also means everything.

It's gonna be April the 23/24th and our season is still on, what's not to be excited about. We're organising minibuses and times for a game over a month away and every blue in work is trying to blag that weekend off, (15 season ticket holders plus a good few lads who go when they can compared to the paltry 3 reds season tickets and 4 who go to the match, 3 of them are stewards cos there mingebags). Cup everyday of the week, Watford in the final would be amazing especially this year, let's do it for Howard lads xxx

Disagree. You always aim for a primary goal, and that's the best that is possible to achieve. The logical goal is and always will be winning the Premier League.

See Leicester for details.

As a fan, Winning the league is the main aim, European competitions are all about away days on the lash, ever since champions league became a cup which you don't have to be champions to win. League isn't realistic so therefore an FA Cup is better than top 5 for me. Can't parade 5th place through the city and watch the kopites faces. The league is important to keep the players though, Lukaku, Barkley etc will be happy with an FA Cup but year on year they are probably interested in CL medals and playing in Europe.

Pretty sure even the most die hard Leicester fan would have said the same thing 12 months ago.
Winning the league IS very unlikely, but that HAS to be the target going into every season.

Back to the original question however - "FA cup or 5th?" That is a no brainer, FA cup every time.

It has to be the cup for me

Top 4 finish only then your talking about a tight call but if it's a case of finishing 5th or the F.A cup and a trip to Wembley ?

well silverware wins hands down

The cup and 5th would be a good season.

The cup and 12th is an ok season.

No cup and 12th is a terrible season.

If the choice was 4th or the cup it would be much tougher. Yes brilliant to finally get another trophy but for the long term future of the club Champions league is key. Attract better players and earn more money.

Great question.

The funny thing is that, in spite of our awful underachievement all season, a cup and any non-relegation position is a great season for us. Of course it is. What's the point of finishing high in the league? To win things. If you're not finishing first you're hoping it's 2nd-4th, to get into the Champions league. Why? To get more money. Why? To get better. Why? To win things.

Winning trophies is the bottom line. We haven't won anything for 21 years. Winning the Cup beats finishing 2nd, never mind 5th. What do we remember more, finishing 4th a decade ago or winning the FA Cup two decades ago?
