FA Cup or 5th?

A variation on a question we've discussed here over the years, substituting 5th for 4th this time.

Before you have a go I'm quite aware we haven't won the cup. If we don't the question is moot.

But would you feel differently if we had played more consistently in the league and finished 5th again, which isn't rare for us, but been eliminated from the cup?

Would you consider the season a disappointment, even if we end up in exactly the same place?

This is more a psychological question than anything. I'm curious. I think I probably would feel better with 5th, but then we don't get trophies for 5th.

Why any person rather finish 5th than win the F.A. Cup totally baffles me.

I think a lot of you are missing the point, not that I'm arguing against a cup win. Of course a trophy matters more. The question was how would it affect your perception of the season as a whole and where we are as a club. Wigan won a cup. So did Portsmouth. A lot of good that did them despite how it felt at the time.

I'm just admitting that I'd feel better about our prospects going forward if we'd shown more in the league, which is 9 months, rather than a good cup run.

This must be a joke, surly nobody in their right mind would ever pick 5th or even 4th place over lifting the cup! Maybe I'm just old fashioned and out of touch with the modern game but to me you'd have to be certifiable to pick 5th place over the cup.

Well finishing 5th didnt really alter much either. Nor 4th for that matter.

A cup can be a launch pad for better days. Players have a medal, a different mindset sometimes. Manager is (perhaps) vindicated by the fan base. See Manchester United circa late 80s early 90s 3 years after Fergie took over as a good example.

Lob in a new owner. A few bob. Etc. And if we pick it up, we might look back in a few years time and say "That was the turning point".

And in 50 years time, Wiki, or whatever it will be by then, will have 2016 as an Everton FA Cup winning year.

Ok fair enough. Good answer.

I get what your saying or asking
Understand what you mean , the higher league position is important because if you flirt with relegation continuously you'll eventually get caught, mid table mediocrity is palatable.
But,it's a cup for me all the time!
