Jack Rodwell says playing alongside Everton’s experienced professionals is boosting his performances.
The 18-year-old excelled in an important defensive midfield role during Saturday's 0-0 draw with Tottenham, and afterwards he revealed that he’d recieved guidance in abundance from captain Phil Neville and his midfield counterparts throughout.
And Rodwell believes gaining more minutes on the field with the likes of Tim Cahill and Steven Pienaar can only be beneficial for the younger players’ development.
"They are experienced professionals and they do their best to help the youngsters like and Dan (Gosling) and myself, so to have them alongside us is good," Rodwell told evertonTV.
"I had Phil Neville screaming down my ear all game, and as the captain he's trying to give everyone advice which is good.
"Me and Dan get on well. When we play together we always link up well, we help each other as we were on the same side (of the pitch) so we were talking to each other throughout the game."
During the frustrating draw with Harry Redknapp's side, Rodwell managed to execute several long-range shots for the Toffees - a clear indication that the youngster's increasing first team experience is boosting his confidence.
"I had a few to be honest", Rodwell continued. "In the second half, I was probably a bit anxious to get the shot away - maybe I should have played a bit more - but I felt like we weren’t penetrating them so I rushed some shots.
"I had a decent one in the first half with my left foot which was a bit closer. With experience, I will know when to shoot and when not to.
"The squad is getting smaller with injuries so hopefully I will stay in the team and if not, then I will keep working hard to try and get back in.
"We're still there or thereabouts for fifth place, which is good. And if we take that knowledge into our last two games it will give us confidence. The pressure isn't off now, we've got to get that fifth place."

At the start of the game I thought it was a big mistake sticking Rodwell in the DM on his own, and we were getting over run.

He threw in some great tackles (against Hutton was class) and broke up some plays then settled quick. He had that shot and he then didnt look out of place, having Modric pretty much in his back pocket all game.

Future is bright for the lad. Its funny reading Neville was shouting in his ear all game. He still needs that person to guide him in the game.

I had a nightmare at the start, it took me about 10minutes to realise that Neville was playing RB. I was saying to my mate, whys Neville always on the right side, he was just laughing at me.

Cahill supported Rodwell very well and you could always hear Nevilles death like calls from across the pitch, because lets face it, we didnt sing once.

I was impressed by him going and standing over Hutton after he raked him - but still keeping his cool. Good confidence on the lad.

(I quite liked Hutton before he went to Spurs but he's declined into a slow dirty git.)

Rodwell is a example of why we shouldn't worry about not having the money the likes of City and Spurs will have. We don't need to spend tens of millions on players when we have young players the likes of Jack coming through. Let's hope the Baxter's of this world will follow him and we will have a conveyor belt of talented youngers coming into a fabulous squad

Goat , I did the same thing with Neville . I got buzzed off too .
However , the St . End , ... well , my boy , we've had this conversation before .....
Neville comes out of that interview as good as young Jackie . He's been everything you want an Everton Captain to be the last 18 months , and , ..( sound of L.C.A.B. literally choking on huge mounds of humble pie , ..) we are lucky to have him . There . Ive said it !!
You're just a shat Gary Neville indeed . We shall see , oh Cockney no-marks .
Pah !!!

I'm sorry to admit I did. He needs to improve a lot more.

I like that you have want more from our players, I admire it. But your wrong. Rodwell is an 18 year old CB, playing CM in the hardest league in the world.

Every game he has played he has shone. The defensive side of his game is excellent, he looks confident on the ball and he plays simple passes.

Just what more do you want from the lad mate?

The lads 18 and he didnt look out of place against a strong Tottenham side.

He needs to improve yes, and at the moment he cant marshal the midfield on his own, but he looks better than some established players in the prem.

He's going to be a special player IMO. He needs games to do that

He is not excellent imo. He's reading of the game, offensively and decision making is still very raw. I'm sure we have seen many better players at 18 years old.
I'm not saying we should sell him, put him in reserve etc. I'm saying he has a lot of room for improvement.

Rodwell is one of the brightest young prospects at any club in the premiership.
If things remain the same financially at Everton, we'll struggle to keep him.

Kid , no offence , but Jackie's a player . The big 4 would snap him up , given the chance . and he scored 1st goal at new Wembley . Portentious , methinks .
Im loving him , personally .

Well, Arsenal and Chelsea were interested in him. But the thing with Rodwell is that he's not a flashy player, a striker or winger that's gonna get the press all over him, and the hype to build.

He's going to be key to the spine of a top team. The minute he becomes anywhere near the finished artcile - Everton are going to be smashing 15mill + bids away left right and centre.
