After that performance you have to ask what is so good about this team that they won't be struggling all season.
We have to hope the forward players click and the new players add something also that one of Delph or Gbamin can get for and firing next to Gomes. Granted at the moment I am a bit worried but if we move to a 433 and Silva coaches it we can do ok. Fair to aay it's another transition year(like every year it seems).

The club were well aware that Chelsea have Lampard in charge of a team with a transfer ban.

United came off a terrible end of season with an inexoerienced manager.

6th should be the bare minimum with how this club finished the campaign.

YET AGAIN we hit the ground stuck in slow motion due to unfit and unready players, and get turned over by Championship standard dross.

I am sick of it.
Two things don't help. How late we bring new players in. The average preseason we have, we don't play any quality then expect to hit the ground running, that doesn't happen. Until we address these things or get to the point where we are only adding one or two players our starts will always be sticky.

7th is a minimum for me. I feel a bit sorry for silva because he made it clear he wanted certain things in the squad and we haven’t got them for him, which is poor. On the flip side, his obsession with letting our midfield get overrun in virtually every game is starting to grate on me, and his reluctance to make subs is infuriating. I don’t think our squad is better than it was last year so 7th will be a tough ask for silva, but another season below that can’t be accepted when you’ve spent what we have.
This has probably been the most obvious critique of Silva’s reign. He wants to play counter attacking footy, which is fine, but against these teams you have to be able to adapt. We have no plan B. We have no Gana either which doesn’t help. We can’t win the ball upfield and we allow them to get back. We can’t do much more wrong really. It has to improve.

I'd just like to see progress toward being a team that can actually trouble the top 4 in the next year or two. Last season there were some signs at the back but we aren't reaching that level until we can play teams we are better than and create enough chances to reliably score multiple goals and win those games. That's the next step and let's just say it is not off to a great start.

It's still only August. There's a long season ahead, but as long as this side struggles to win away, then we shall remain mid table fodder. As i said earlier, it's no good coming into form when there's nothing substantial left to play for.

I know they missed some sitters today, but 1 goal in 3 games is concerning to me.

I'm also tired of the slow starts to the season. As a few others have mentioned, the situations at Chelsea and Man U, and Arsenal being the wildcard they have been for the last few years. A good start would go along way. Drawing against what many regard a bad side at Crystal Palace, and losing to Aston Villa are game two games one would want atleast 4 points from.

dont like any of the poll options

cup semi unrealistic, i would take 7th and a quarter final

I think we all would mate.

But at what point would you finally and conclusively say “this isn’t good enough?”

Let’s rephrase, would 9th and a QF be okay in your book this season?

It certainly wouldn’t be in mine.

My opinion 12 months ago was that 7th this season would be disappointing, but acceptable, given the ambitions of the club. Silva would get the first year completely free and from there, as long as he's backed in the transfer market, results would be expected and quickly.

Anything worse than 7th this season would represent pretty abject failure and I'd be totally fine with sacking him if that's where we end up, as long as a good alternative is available. I can't think of many successful managers in the PL today, that need 3 whole seasons to deliver considerable progress.

To put it into context, we have ONE POINT against a very poor C Palace & Poor Villa side, just let that sink in.

Teams who finish top 10 don’t do that

In fairness, plenty of teams have had poor starts in the past and gone on to have good seasons. However, we’re making it much harder for ourselves and will probably need to pick up more points against the top six.

Based on the 1st three performances, that doesn’t look very likely.

How much money do we spend before there is genuine expectation?

This is the real question, for me.

Outspending most top teams in Europe over the last few windows, when do we, as a fan base, decide that even 7th isn’t really good enough.
