First of Moyes got it wrong last night with numerous mistakes that i have to say he was man enough to hold his hands up and say "yeah i got it wrong". But its madness to throw the baby out with the bath water, being five years into a plan of gradual improvement both on and of the pitch.
We have committed ourselves to year on year development and have improved drasticly from were we were when Moyes took over. Our expectations changing to having the ability to/and actually qualifying for europe rather than looking at our remaining ten fixtures and praying we make it to forty points
Many on the forum were up in arms after the derby for Benitiez/Dickheads attack of our style of football with the general sense being "what does he want us to do go all out attack, and let their 100 mill squad anilate us" i mean the Spurs squad is of equal value & listening to Jol after the match he thought he was blessed to come away with a win (you have to admire the man).
Fact is we were within a inch of drawing the game, we were beatem by an absolutley unstoppable goal. Goals like that are very difficult to legislate for from a tactical point of view, sometimes they go in, more of the time there skied, its the luck of the draw. So lets have a little perspective
The nature of leauge compitition dictates that gun-ho football does not work. Consistancy and the ability to grind out games and accumalate points is what counts in the leauge. This is why Aresnal arguably the most talented team in the leauge will not win the prem until they learn this skill. Like United have since last year.
Now i am not saying that Moyes doesnt have his flaws and does make tactical errors at times and beleive monty makes a good point about consevatism being the hallmark of his makeup as a former centre half. But i also beleive that he is a young a manger himself. Like young players i am willing to take occasional errors on the chin in the name of experience and learning from mistakes.
I want to come out and defend Moyes weighing the positives against the negatives and on balance beleive he generally makes better decisons than bad ones. I beleive judgement on our style of football has to be tempered against our current means. To put it simply i think we are have done fantasticly well for a team who have had on average 7 millon to spend per annum on talent. And am more than pleased that we are now identfying and signing playes of the quality of AJ, Lescott, Fernades, Arteta, Cahill rather than seeing us sign, maders, mc clennds, watsons, gazzas, linderoths, ginolas, farrellys, o kanes blomquits and the dead wood its taken us years to get rid of.
I also he beleive he genrally gives a rat arse about the club, and the fans, and our tradition and stature a fact i dont think he gets enough credit for.
To put it into context if we year on year spent 30 million on new players comfortably i would expect/demand a better style of football and be pushing for at least`a champions leauge place every season. But the fact is we dont have those resources, and if we did who is to say that Moyes would or could not be the man who could change our style of play given a level financial field with basicly the top six in the country. He hasnt and we havnt seen him been given that oppurtunity.
Truth is the premiership is so finely balanced that Knee-Jerk reactions can undo years of good work and development. You just have to look at Charltlon and West Ham who find themselves in predicaments that may take them years to recover from.
For all those looking for a new manger i encourage anyone who wants a change to name names? There is absolutley no-one and i do mean no-one out there who would do a better job than Moyes despite his errors and conservatisim at times.
The fact is Moyes is the only manager thus far to crack the Top four in the Modern Day Premeirship. He has proved he can be successfull on a shoe string, picks up absolute gems for minimum cost, and emphasis buying young players who values increase year on yerar playing for the club. Other premiership clubs would love if we got rid of him. Fact!
He cocked up last night and his decision undoubhtedly handed the innitiave back to Spurs in a half we were dominating but for all he has done/does/will do for us in the future i beleive he entitled to every once in a while.
