James Greenop was a guest of Everton three days before his death

Everton FC has paid tribute to a 10-year-old boy hit and killed by a bus three days after meeting his heroes.

James Greenop was knocked down by a bus near the Matchworks on Speke Road, Liverpool, on Tuesday.

The club sent a shirt for his "final journey", flowers and a signed letter from manager Roberto Martinez.

James's family has set up an online fund-raising page in his memory to collect donations for Wirral Autistic Society.

The "devoted" Everton fan had a kick-around on the pitch at half-time at Goodison Park during the team's 2-1 victory over Hull City.

Before the match, James also had a tour of the stadium with Everton In The Community and met a number of players who signed his kit.

"He told us it had been 'the best day of my life'," said his parents Helen and Russell.

They added: "We would like to thank Everton Football Club for sending flowers, a signed letter of condolence from their manager, and a kit for James to wear for his final journey.

"They have been really supportive."

His parents have set up a Just Giving page for a cause special to the "family's heart".

Just seen this on the Echo site - anyone else going to Villa tomorrow? A group of fans are trying to get the fans to sing his name in tribute:

Everton-mad youngster died after being hit by bus on Speke Road

Football fans are hoping to pay tribute to the victim of a bus crash at Everton’s match at Aston Villa.

Ten-year-old Everton supporter James Greenop died after he was hit by a bus on Speke Road, near the Matchworks, at lunchtime on Tuesday.

Everton supporters took to social media to try and encourage fans to sing the youngster’s name at half time of the Blues' Premier League fixture at Villa Park.

A picture of the Whiston Willis Primary School pupil circulated on Twitter with the message: “A request to any of our fans attending Saturday’s match against Aston Villa, to show respect to the family and friends of James Greenop, whom sadly lost his life in a tragic accident, we are helping in organising the singing of “James Greenop” during half time.

“Any help our fellow Blues can give in easing the pain of his family in their time of mourning is greatly appreciated.”

The image was tweeted by users including former Liverpool player Stan Collymore who said: “I'm sure fans of 2 great clubs will heartily celebrate the life of a young Evertonian, lost recently.”

James’s family described him as a “devoted EFC fan” and said he was given a tour of Goodison Park before last weekend’s match against Hull, which he said was “the best day of his life”.
