Everton's Captain

Has to be baines, complete pro. rarely loses the head in spite of some of the stupidity sround him.Yes nev i am pointing at you.

I think Baines would do well too, level headed like you say but sticks up for himself and doesn't seem shy of giving someone hassle when needed.

Think it would add to his game, only saw him wave his arms about in disgust once at the start of last season. Tie him to the club he loves even more. We will only lift a trophy when we have a true fan as captain. (premonition of mine).

You know you could do worse then Pienaar i think he could thrive on it. Baines is a good shout as well, but logically it will be Jags wont it. Jelevic deserves a shout as well. Mofro all day long but i think hes a goner if im honest.

Prob not Tim Howard.

if johnny was playing week in week out like he should be (imo) i would have him over baines, but baines is the most calm and solid of players that is a regular starter.

You know, I may have been a bit lazy saying he's not vocal enough.

He's so nice it's easy to think he's a soft touch, but he isn't. I remember him berating a linesman for a crap call and shouting something like "I'm doing my job, you do yours!"

Baines it is. He's shown amazing commitment to snub bigger teams and the lad truly, utterly gets it. He's also beyond immense and has years ahead of him.

I don't know whether Baines would flourish under the pressure captaincy or it'd take something away from his performance, though. Or it'd change absolutely nothing.

Since timmy left i was searching for someone on the pitch that gets it, baines is the closest at the minute. Its to early for gibson but him singing with the fans at the end of the utd game gave me a bit of a lift about him.

I'd give it to Baines, if you're going to give someone the captaincy you need to know that they'll pretty much start every game thanks to their commitment and good performances, not just because they're captain. Granted, Baines isn't the most vocal of players but that shouldn't be the reason why he doesn't get the armband since other players can take up the slack in that sense. If a captain must be vocal though Jags is the obvious choice; after him I'd say the best candidates would be either Johnny or Gibson. In future Coleman could be a good shout if he nails down the right back slot and from what I've seen Duffy is captain material too.

I'm not sure it's that big of a deal to be honest.

They're all highly paid professionals who should be able to do their job without someone 10 yards away pointing and shouting at them.

I don't think a captains role is as important during play these days as it used to be, in a team full of experienced internationals they know what to do and what to shout to who.

But you need one who'll stick up for himself and the team and i reckon Baines will, plus he ain't going anywhere.

I agree, but some players seem to just go mysteriously downhill after being given the captaincy. And you can never have enough motivation - captains can often add this when dragging teams back from the brink of defeat. You can't imagine Baines screaming and geeing players up in the same way that Scott Parker or John Terry do.

If you're talking about when Everton players have had it whilst Neville's been out (Cahill when we lost like every game), then that's a different kettle of fish. Being a stand-in captain isn't the same.

Although you may be talking about other clubs, I don't know.
