I find it interesting the article has come out in the Echo about Broadhead. There is quite few firm assertions in it about him being one to watch for the future. In all honesty, it's about as praiseworthy as I have seen for any young player in the last couple of years.
There is no doubt that the Echo have been briefed on it. Someone in the club is giving him a bit of a write up there.
As for the lad himself I have covered in an earlier post I certainly won't be jumping up and down until he breaks into the under 21's. He is a young 2nd year scholar though and still 17. He is still growing up a bit physically and as Eggs has said has come on a lot in the last 12 months. A bit of a late bloomer there.
I think the club has also tried to keep more continuity this season on the playing sides of things. In all likelihood our desire to push players up cost us winning the under 18 league for the second year running last year. It almost led to relegation for the under 21's as well. While players have gone out on loan, for both teams there appears to have been an effort made to keep key players in each team.
For example Williams, Davies have not gone out on loan yet with the under 21's, while Donuhue, Broadhead & Brewster have not moved up to the reserves. I do wonder if that was a conscious decision. The alternative is, having moved a remarkable number of players up to under 21's over the last 2-3 years we have filled a lot of spaces up and we can be more patient again?
I'm not sure. However it will be interesting to see how Broadhead gets on next season. His numbers are very good and has really come on from last season where he was normally a substitute. It will be very interesting seeing how he progressing alongside Dowell. Both play similar positions, both highly rated but both have done it almost the opposite ways.
Powell has been pushed through from under 16's upwards to play well above himself. He has played very few games at his right level (i.e. under 18's). Broadhead has alternatively never really played above his age, despite excelling in his age group. As a general rule and certainly at Everton the attitude would be discard performances in your own age group and really only take note of the lads who play higher.
I do wonder though, with some of the changes we have seen above if that is changing a little? Roberto is always keen for players to go through certain markers to prove they are ready. I hope Broadhead can continue to do that as at under 18's he looks a very exciting talent. I also think the article on the main site and in the Echo have not arrived in a vacuum and people within the club obviously think highly of him.
